From a retired Navy Guy....P2K is the best Public Shootin facility currently open in San Diego County. There are several private clubs, as mentioned above..Escondido Game and Fish, Lemon Grove (actually in Alpine); Lakeside Gun Club (actually in Boulevard), then Camp Pendelton has a trap range (military or gest only), an hour north onthe I-51 is REDLANDS (best shooting spot in Southern California; and the closest ATA Fields).. But my personal favorite is the Wednesday night trap league at Lemon Grove..LarryB
Ajax,
The Lakeside Gun Club is located in Boulevard (way out in the boonies) and the (2) trap fields are situated so that the top field is right next to the Mexico border. You will actually shoot into Mexico (over the top of a steel fence) and it is quite a distraction following the bird and then all of a sudden there's this SOLID STEEL fence. Lots of lost birds over there...
There isn't any public trapshooting at this range. Only for members, and only during a special event.
I don't know how it is now with the global warming and all of that but when I was in boot camp in 1961 I froze my but off there in the merry month of May. They wind off of the ocean was chilly to say the least. Also got the worst sunburn on my nose I ever had.
The turnoff for the range is 60 miles east of San Diego and almost to Jacumba. It's several miles of (rough) dirt road that takes you southeast from hwy 8 to the range (I'm guessing about 12 miles of dirt road). It is out in no man's land for sure. All you see is border patrol vehicles checking for illegals.
Thanks Kevin, it's the place I thought it was. I spent some Summers in Live Oaks/Jacumba area. You're right, the back country was a rough area. I can believe it's a lot worse now.
Chip had the target tossers in Otay, and the Lakeside Sportmans club moved from Lakeside to Boulevard. Some of the current members were there when the club moved. Not a bad area once you get to the range. But the trap machines are set up in between two hills, and the echo from the muzzle return is incredible along with the gail force winds that blow up through that canyon between the hills.
I've never seen a target climb so high from the wind blowing it in my life until I shot at that club. It climbed at least 75 feet up the hill...you better be ready to shoot nature wobble when you shoot there.
