I've been looking for a nice used 686 w/a 4" barrel and saw one on Friday. The shop owner said it was an older model w/o the lock. It had Hogue grips, all SS construction and appeared to be in nice shape. The sticker price is $ 580.00. Is this inline? Also is there something I should be on the look for as far as excessive wear? Thanks..Randy

Look for flame cutting on the top strap just above the cylinder/bbl gap. Also check the recoil shield for marks made by having lots of rounds fired. Check for end shake which appears like the cylinder moves forward into the bbl when the gun is cocked. Look for cylinder bolt drag on the outside of the cylinder.

Barring any of those issues, the asking price is reasonable.

Thanks Wolfram. I have it on hold so I'll take a close look when I get back there.

If you can get a decent photo I could probably tell by looking. Most likely its a good pistol, only a few whack jobs like myself actually shoot them enough to wear them out.

In all honesty, I'd post the request on the Smith and Wesson forum...

BigM-Perazzi, I'm at work and can only "visit" certain firearm related sites.
