The serial number should be on the bottom of the grip frame.
Very early guns had the last few digits of the serial number on various parts.
Later guns have an assembly number that is not related to the serial number at all.
There is no model number of guns made prior to 1957.
After 1957 the model number will be stamped on the frame inside the area where the crane is. The cylinder has to be swung out to see it.
And again, S&W made a lot of .38 Specials in various frame sizes and configurations.
BTW, made sure the caliber stamping specifically says .38 Special. Because there is a .38 S&W that is a different cartridge, seen on WWII guns supplied to the British.
50 years puts it in the 60's, the model # and serial # are inside the crane. prior to them giving them model #'s the serial number is on the bottom of the grip as stated...
