Good idea. Maybe for starters you could put together a list of all the clubs that could serve as host. List all those with at least 80 fields and 800 campsites, that would be a good place to start.

Talk about being a stick in the mud Bigdon the moron. Why not, its better then what they have now. If this was to happen the club could make enough money to cover the 4 years they did not use the area. The local area could also do well with this idea and make us gun owners look good with them. It would also give shooters who don't have the time or the money to go to the Grand. Where it is now there are alot of shoots who can not go there. This would give others a chance to do so.

Paul in MN and Scott, don't worry about Bigdon he is nothing but a lap dog for the EC and BOD. In his eye's they can do no wrong as long as he thinks he is going to get a tummy rub.

Gargoyle if shooters don't have the time or money to attend now how would moving it closer help? Will you have more of either? I think not. It's too hot, too far, too windy, too dusty, too expensive. As Bill Elliot said "if you can't run with the big dogs, stay on the porch". Where will you be next August? Me you ask? Sparta, having a good time. Jake

Can anyone please tell me why everyone is down (meaning bad idea)with where the grand is now ? Ohio was a Dump compared to now. Sparta is new Give it a chance .Give it a rest .Nowhere is there a place that has 80 fields Nowhere is there a place that can host that many shooters. The most positive thing is that is has a chance to grow into a very nice place for us to shoot give it 5yrs to 8yrs . Thats not really that long .

I'll type slower so maybe you will understand this time around - what facilities have the ability to hold the Grand? If the state of Illinois isn't going to get its investment back holding it every year, what makes you think someone would get their investment back holding it every 4-5 years.

You can bet people are lined up for such a project, hell they had all kinds of places lined up when the relocation was on the agenda and after it was all over they sorted them out and came up with Sparta, Illinois ... All of the others (Amarillo, Texas withdrew their interest and proposal) will sure be sorry in the future ... Won't work, not practical, bad idea, (fill in the blanks) _____,________, __________ and _________ ... WPT ... (YAC) ...

How many fields are at the PA homegrounds, Linn Creek and the new Las Vegas site being built?

The new facility in Las Vegas is interesting . . . if you believe some people here it's going to be the greatest facility in the world. But to answer the question above - they are building 24 fields to start with, certainly not enough to hold the Grand. Everyone talks about 125 fields at Las Vegas - but if you read the fine print on that project that is IF they have the money.

Illinois built all 120 fields at once.

To answer the other question, Linn Creek has 60 fields, PA has less than that. Marengo has 40, with a promise for more.

Regarding the idea that the Pat Traps could be trucked around from site to site - that's probably a bigger (i.e. more costly) job than you might think. Esepcially if wherever you truck them to doesn't have houses that will hold Pat Traps and require modifications.

j2jake, lets see. If you live on the east coast and its in Ill its about a 10 hour drive. If its on the east coast depending where its may only be an hour or two away where you could drive there and then drive home and sleep in your own home and not a hotel. It could be the samething on the west coast.

Hill topper, you would not happen top be a lap dog for the ATA would you?

Scott, are you saying that the Grand is loosing money per shoot? If that is true then why are others saying its holding its own?

I assume from your posting that anyone that disagrees with you is a lap dog for the ATA.

I'm not saying the Grand is losing money per shoot, my reference was to the investment the State of Illinois made and their ability to recover that investment. At $3 per shooter/event, it will take a long time.

It should be pretty obvious, even to someone like you, that running a trap range is not an easy way to make a buck. Otherwise they would be springing up like Wal-Marts.

    Here's a simple example:

Let's say you can build a facilty large enough to host the Grand. It's going to cost $25M minimum (State of Illinois spent between $30M - $50M). Now let's say that every time you host the Grand you make $250K. There's no way that's going to happen, but just for fun let's say you do.

That means it will take 100 years to recover your initial investment.

Can you build a world-class facility for less than $25M? Let's say you can do it for $5M. Now you get your initial investment back in 20 years (assuming you can make $250K per year, which you can't).

As for driving 1 or 2 hours to the Grand if it's close to your home . . . what makes you think anyone would do that. The main complaint about Sparta is that people don't want to drive 45 minutes each way. What difference does it make if you are doing it from your house or a hotel - it's still 45 minutes each way?

Scott; If you went out and talked to the tree in your yard it would be like talking to Gargle and the responses would make more sense.
