Gave my son a remington 1148 12ga that had a choke tube installed prior to me getting the gun. I shot it quite a bit before he got it. He calls about two weeks later, dad the barrel blew apart. Some friend convinced him it was due to a thin wall from the choke install. I cry foul on this. Barrells blow from an obstruction. What do you all think. Anybody have a barrel or know where one can be purchased or know someone who can fix the barrel and install a new choke. I am going to see the gun and look at the damage myself.

Did he periodically check to make sure the choke tube was fully seated? A wad catching the skirt of the choke tube can cause a lot of havoc.

I have seen only 2 choke self destructions
both did good damage to the guns barrel
    1. basically tore the threads right out and flared the barrel a bit.

    2. the barrel split along the recess where the choke sits.

I do not know if these where factory choke tubed or not ?

If the choke wasn't installed properly by the gunsmith (not centered correctly), this could definitely happen.

Or someone tried a different type of choke tube that was a slightly different size or thread pattern.

Since you shot the gun quite a bit I would rule out wad snagging due to improper installation.

Partially unscrewed choke could cause this but it would be unusual. I was at a shoot once where a guy shot the tube from a borrowed Perazzi across the range.

FYI there were no 11-48's made with choke tubes.

I have to go with barrel obstruction on this one.
