Remington says no, but I do it, and have not had any issues. I have 4 1100s and 2 11-87s, and trade barrels back and forth. The only issue, is that later 1100s and 11-87s use a thicker extractor, so an early 1100 barrel has to be modified by enlarging the extractor cut. I only shoot target loads, not 3" shells through my 11-87 barrels on my 1100s. Mark

It's a roll of the dice. Many have gotten away with it. A few have had problems, mainly from poor sealing with the o-ring because the positioning groove in the magazine tube is in different locations on the 1100 vs 1187.

My advice is if you have 1100s and 1187s you have nothing to lose by trying it.

If you are contemplating buying an 1187 barrel to try on an 1100, you might want to rethink this. It probably will work, but you also might be one of those who will have problems.

And then there's the issue of forends. The 1187 barrel cannot use the wood 1100 forend. There is no clearance for the metal gas shield, which also acts as a spacer to index the barrel properly with the action. And the 1187 forend lacks a detent ball to hold an 1100 magazine cap on. Some have used a rubber o-ring as a makeshift friction washer to get around this issue. Note that Remington makes a universal 1100 synthetic forend that has the detent ball which will also fit an 1187 barrel. However, they also make this same forend as an 1187 forend that lacks the detent ball. You have to be sure you get the version with the detent ball.

And the above covers the 12ga only.

As for the 20ga 1100 vs 1187, forget it. The swap will not work. Ever.
