It's pretty hard to go wrong if you start with IMR 700-X (if you like Hodgdon/Du Pont powders) or Red Dot, if you like Alliant/Hercules.

The respective websites:

http://data.hodgdon.com/main_menu.asp

http://www.alliantpowder.com/reloaders/default.aspx?page=/reloaders/RecipeList.aspx&gauge=12&gtypeid=10&shotype=3

have abt 36-17 1oz loads for any kind of hull, wad and primer you might have.

There are several other good 1oz powders, but every one compares themself to 700-X & Red Dot.

I like STS hulls, DR TGT 12 wads, with either E3 powder or Red Dot and and enough powder to shoot it about 1175 FPS.

Here's my 2 favorites (actually being a semi-lazy person and in keeping with my KISS Principle):

I only use Federal Gold Medal, Estate & Top Gun hulls:

1 oz: 17 grs. of 700X, 12S0 wad, 209A primer = 1200 fps (singles & both shots of doubles)

1-1/8 oz: 19.5 grs. of 700X, 12S3 wad, 2019A primer = 1250 fps (handicap)

Clays or Clay Dot is an excellent powder for 1 oz. Loads. Superb application of this fast powder. Cleaner than most, as well.

I like this one for singles:

Remington Hull
Winchester Primer
17-ish grains of Hodgdon Clays powder (plus or minus a half a grain, as you prefer)
Downrange XL-1 neon green wad (Downrange red wad, Winchester WAA12SL, and Green Duster wads all work well too)
One ounce (or whatever your bushing throws) of hard 8-1/2 shot

Like Wayne of PA,

I have a similiar recipe,

16yd

STS or AA
17.5 gr of Promo
1 oz. 8 1/2
Cheddite primer
Windjammer 1 1/8 wad

Hdcp

Same hull's
I increase shot drop to 1 1/8 oz.
and Promo drop to 18.5
I use the same 1 1/8 wad for both load's.
the 1 oz crimp's slightly shallow but look's
great and I don't have to keep two different wad's on hand.

Here's mine....

Remington gun club hull, noble sport primer, 15 - 17 gr. tightwad (depending on the speed you like) green duster or pink claybuster, 1 oz of 8's, close the crimp, shoot and repeat.

I am looking for a clean buring 1 ounce load at 1200 fps. Reading the Alliant brochure I see Red Dot, American Select and e3 all recommended for 1 ounce loads and all claim to be clean buring. I haven't used any of these powders before. Any thoughts as to which is the cleanest burning. Pros and cons of each.

My load is just like timb99's, except I use a WAA12L wad (the pink one).

Tim99 listed a great 1 oz load and one of my all time favorites. Getting CLAYS at a reasonable price has been a problem for me in the past 18 months or so and I tried PROMO as an alternate. I won't go so far as to say that PROMO is as good as CLAYS but it breaks targets just as well. (does leave more residue and moisture) The main thing about PROMO is that I can get it when I need it and it is priced right.

Here is what I use,

ST,N27,GC hull
1 Oz #8
17.5g PROMO
WW Pink Wad or TGT 12 clone
R209p
