    Here's the thought,
If we have temporary relief from the gas prices, say increased domestic production and offshore drilling or something of that sort. Or more possibly the gas tax suspension proposed by Clinton and McCain. Now obviously this would lower the price of gas providing the much needed relief for Americans, at least in the short run. But then what? So we have cheaper gas while the supply continues to diminish, and say in another 10 years, where do you think prices will be? I hope that nothing is done about gas prices and that we actually make genuine attempts at alternative energy sources/alternative engines like fuel cells. No more of this psychological relief crap that the government is throwing our way! I mean Ethanol? Come on! It takes 250lbs of corn to fuel one SUV I believe. It may have been 250lbs of corn to produce one gallon, but I'm not quite sure, don't quote me on that. This is just like the 70's, a temporary solution to a long term problem. I think it's time for America to wake up, and our government to start caring and start showing some real incentives for scientists and energy companies to find what we need.

Contrary to what you have been led to believe, the world is not running out of oil.

    Wake up America!

There's no OIL SHORTAGE. The gas shortage is man made and part of it is refineries or lack of....

    I agree with bocephus.

The world has sufficient oil if we simply go after it, especially the oil in oil shale. Norway and other nations safely recover offshore oil in the North Sea and the North Sea if far more dangerous that the American coastline.

I am astounded at the belief that wind and solar will make a significant contribution, given the current technologies in use.

Nuclear power, given the successful use in our country and many other countries, should be expanded. It was a huge mistake for the US to stop nuclear development in the 1980’s after the Three Mile Island event. If we would have continued nuclear development, many utilities and factories that presently generate electricity with natural gas would not need to do so as there would be ample low cost electricity available from nuclear. Was not Jane Fonda just great in the China Syndrome?

IMO, the global warming issue cannot be solved by the US alone. China and India dwarf us in population and their energy use is expanding. Their national goals are to reduce poverty, not to reduce green house emissions.

I think that we will see more hybrid vehicles as Toyota has developed a proven system for small cars. Honda plans to introduce hydrogen fuel cell vehicles and I hope these work. However, it will take a lot of time for the US to develop the infrastructure to support a widespread use of hydrogen fuel cells.

If we could somehow magically peek 60 years into the future, I bet that we will see a return to railroads and light rail via the use of electricity generated by nuclear power. Most of our heavy trucks will still be powered by diesel and that diesel will come from oil, coal or an agricultural crop other than corn or soy.

The law of supply and demand still works. As the demand increases, the world will produce more oil as there are vast reserves still to be recovered. At some point, the high price of gas, diesel, heating oil and food will put an end to the current man made shortage of petroleum.

We may have to suffer through a Democratic President and a Democrat controlled Congress (I hope not) but, at some point the American people will say “I am mad as hell and I won’t take this any more!” The current liberal junk science will be replaced by real alternatives and these alternatives will make use of oil, coal and nuclear energy. We will see more bio-fuel (excluding corn and soy), wind, solar, geothermal, tidal and other niche technologies however oil and coal will still remain as our major energy sources as we have so much of it and will need even more energy.

250# of corn will produce about 12 gallons of Ethanol. I've mixed feelings about ethanol, but I think without the E-85 and 10% blends, our gas would be the same price as diesel. Remember when diesel was always a few cents less than gas?

We DID run out of oil....$50 barrel oil is all gone. But we have a pretty good supply of $130 barrel oil and I bet we have a terrific amount of $200 oil.

Hybrids are bad new, once all those cars start to fall apart, we are stuck with their batteries which are the worst things possible! Honda's fuel cell is, in my opinion, excellent! Honda is even developing a home fueling source in which you plug this thing into your gas line, and it converts natural gas into hydrogen. Sounds like a great idea to me!
bocephus, uhm, what? Ok where are your facts on this? I'd love to see who is saying that we have plenty of oil. I don't think I've heard that once except by those in denial about the oil problem. (Or those with stock in these companies)

This is the natural outcome of the left and the environmentalists decades long struggle against every viable energy source we have. But the market will take care of itself. It might produce a period of some severe discomfort but it will work itself out. Already the environmentalists are losing their strangle hold on the rest of us. Americans do need to stop squandering our energy. It makes me angry to see individual people driving to work in 3 tons of steel with the biggest V-8 available. You can barely see their little head sticking out above the steering wheel. I think the left has created this problem. But we are all to blame for wasting our resources in unncessary ways. Al Gore, the Hollywood left and Edwards are the worst offenders of all with their private jets and mansions. Typical of left wing socialists. Do as I say not as I do.

highflyer, I'm going to have to respectfully disagree. Now as horrible as a president as Carter was, he got one thing right, small cars. Back then there were cars with better gas millage than the best hybrids out there today! And they weren't hybrids! The "driving to work in 3 tons of steel with the biggest V-8 available," is definitely the right's fault. Mainly, Reagan. His view of "we are Americans! We are the best and we can do whatever we want and drive whatever kind of car we want! If you want to drive a 7 ton V-24 that's just fine! Because we're Americans!" He reversed one of the very things Carter got right in his presidency, possibly the only thing. And now Reagan's politics are coming back and biting us HARD!

Let's see, Arnold says no way will he allow drilling off Cali. coast. He thinks electric cars are the future. Duh! Does it not take electricity to charge those batteries? How do we make electricity? Well the greenies won't allow coal, nuclear, so we need what to make the power? OIL!!!

The market will force Americans to drive what is economically feasible. I remember small cars under Carter. I drove a Renault LeCar. I had 3 of them and they got 42 miles to the gallon on highway. I have never bought an 8 cylinder car. My SUV now is a 4 cylinder. What happened is there wasn't a shortgage after Carter. Gas got cheap again. People went back to large vehicles. If the shortage of oil is real and not contrived then people will start to drive more fuel efficient cars. The market will correct behavior. If it is contrived again then prices will come back down once production catches back up to demand.

Phantom, you lost all credibility when you said that Carter got something right- he was and is a complete idiot. I really get sick of you people who would presume to tell everybody else what to drive. I drive a nearly 3 ton vehicle because it's what I need to pull a travel trailer, 10,000 lb utility trailer and livestock trailer. If you and the rest of the blowhards can point me to a puny Carter vehicle that can do that, I'll surely buy one. Until then, bite me.

Do you experts on what I should drive think it's practical to buy a separate vehicle for every possible use? Maybe to keep the liberal know-it-alls happy, I should buy a moped for when I'm by myself, a Smartcar for when I have one passenger, a hybrid for when I have 3, and use my diesel pickup only when I need to pull or carry a big load. I'll be glad to drive all these as soon as you gasbags pay for them- until then give it a rest and mind your own business.

You think other countries drive small cars because they want to? Wake up, they do out of necessity due to restrictions by their governments (mainly high taxes). That is one of the main reasons you hear how they hate us, they don't hate (envy) us because we are bad people but rather because we work hard and make money and buy what we want. They are jealous of our way of life and would like to have the same. And because their governments won't allow that to happen the liberals want to restrict us to bring us down to same level (or lower) as those that envy (HATE when defined by a liberal) us.

Take a look at Dubai, we could have the same here in America, if only we would stop allowing the liberals to restrict us from doing so. We can't pump oil offshore of Florida for phony environmental reasons but it is ok for China to pump the same oil? Does that mean China is better at it than us? Again WAKE UP! We have oil in North Dakota, plenty of oil, but we don't pump it. Canada pumps oil from the same pool that is under North Dakota and we pay them 130 a barrel for it- our own damn oil!

There is so much oil in this world it seeps up from the ocean floor ALL OVER! There is so much natural gas that it belches up from the ocean floor and sinks ships!

If only we could unite to save this country..............

Well obviously I don't expect someone with the need of a big truck to stop using them, it's just more expensive to operate. What I was referring to are those who drive to the city in a Ram 2500 3.6L V8. A little excessive? Yeah.

You guys are just saying we have plenty of oil, where's your facts?

bocephus, I don't know where that arrogance comes from. I don't know if you've noticed but American's aren't too happy these days, those European countries of which you speak are much happier, and making a heck of a lot more money than Americans. Also, then why in 2000 when we had a conservative Congress, President, AND Supreme Court, did we not start pumping our oil? People don't envy American's anymore! They hate how we feel that we are the boss and do what we want, and have started to become somewhat imperialistic.

    You know guys/gals

I am new to this forum. It just kills me how people go on and on defending their views about all this stuff. I really thought this forum would be about trap shooting and the love of this sport. I am not taking any sides here I just think it’s a shame to use trapshooters.com as a place to vent this kind of hostility.

If you brainwashed liberals wouldn't be so closeminded and did a little research you would find out you have been fed a bunch of crap by your own!

You show YOUR FACTS that we don't have oil for years to come- OH WAIT your facts came from CNN or some other liberal news network. Or was it a michael moore MOVIE?

We have proven oil reserves for many many years to come, we have more oil here of our own than the middle east, yet we are not allowed to pump it while at the same time other countries are. We could be pumping it instead of them. What part of that don't you understand! The congress DID approve drilling in Alaska under Clinton BUT CLINTON VETOED IT. The facts are there for those willing to do the research, but you won't because you would rather just blame someone else for your troubles

Those other countries are actually in far worse shape than we are economically but you won't hear it from your liberal news source. Do a little research of your own, the facts are there. 10 bucks a gallon for gas and you say they are happy? Geez you poor sheople! They are parking their trucks and protesting- o wait cnn didn't show you that, sorry for the shock.

The liberals have been campaigning NONSTOP since 2000, they will stop at nothing to get the Whitehouse back- including hurting the very country they want to control-yes CONTROL NOT govern!

It's high time we run the liberal scum out and return this country to its full potential instead of a bunch of tree hugging blame us for everything weenies.

You dirtbag liberals hate the fact we are the best country on earth and you are willing to compromise it for what you think will be your own benefit. For some reason you believe that if you destroy America the rest of the world will like you, how pathetic! The rest of the world is envious of the USA and wants what we have, instead of taking us down why don't you spineless worms go promote what we have in thier countries? Help them become stronger instead of weakening us!

When is the last time you did a little research to find out who has most of the oil in the world? I will give to a hint. WE DO! We have more oil under US soil than all the other countries put together!

mikescaggs, it sure is about trapshooting and the love of it! Just, half the time. Here at Trapshooters.com, we like to appeal to all horizons! Pick and choose your threads is the name of the game.

bocephus, then where was congress after the clinton years? Why didn't they do anything about it if it's such a great idea? Maybe you should stop getting your news from a conservative source? This is why I avoid the news.

No, gas just isn't a big deal to them, they have these things called "Excellent Public Transportation," so they were smart enough not to even deal with cars, they don't have much of an issue there. They also rely heavily on trains as well, another great thing that America needs more of.

Check out that research, it shows the U.S. ranked 23 in happiest.
    http://www.financialjesus.com/2008/05/27/top-10-happiest-countries/
    Here's another, U.S. is ranked 17.
    http://www.aneki.com/richest.html
That's the richest countries U.S. is in the top 10 here at #6.
    http://www.aneki.com/income_countries.html
Top per-capita incomes, luckily here we are in the Top 5, at a respectable #3!
All I'm saying is that in several ways, we aren't top dog anymore. We have all the potential to be top dog in every aspect, but I think it's going to take us to ditch oil, ditch minimum wages, and start exporting more!
