Three-time Olympic gold medalist Kim Rhode, who was a kid when she took her first shots at Redlands Shooting Park, will be celebrated at the local range Saturday, Aug. 25, beginning at 10 a.m.

The public is invited to attend the event.

Rhode won gold in skeet shooting in London last month, breaking 99 of 100 targets to set an Olympic record. She also became the first American to win medals in five Olympic Games.

The 33-year-old El Monte resident has been shooting in Redlands since she was 10. She won her first gold medal at 17 in Atlanta in 1996 in the double trap event. She followed that with bronze in 2000 in Sydney and another gold in Athens in 2004.

Double trap was eliminated as an event in 2008 in Beijing, but Rhode won a silver in skeet that year, followed by this summer’s gold.

Rhode practiced for London at a variety of Southland locations, but spent three or four days a week in Redlands leading up to the Games because the background there was most similar to what she would see in England in July.

After her victory, in a televised interview, Rhode thanked her friends in Redlands, mentioning a couple of the shooting park regulars by name.

A park spokesperson said Rhode will be signing autographs. Food can be purchased at the event. The park is located at 2125 North Orange Street.
