    HELLO:
i live in wauwatosa wisconsin, a suburb of milwaukee, can not believe how many people are sick around here. my daughter, 3 grandsons, my wife , and myself, and now my mother have all had pneumonia within the last month. i just got out of the hospital and feel like a mack truck has run over me. my breathing is better than it was, but i have a whezz. i have lost weight, which is the only good thing that has come out of this. i feel so weak that i can hardly stand up. my mother now has it, and i am trying to help her and am at her house today. if you ever had pneumonia, how long does it take to feel 100 % again, also i am unable to sleep lying down, i start coughing alot. so i sit in a chair and try to sleep. any advice, also any advice on never getting this stuff again?

Once the inflamation and congestion in your lungs clears up, you should be able to rest laying down ... I would hope the Doctor gave you some meds to help clear them up which will help with your breathing also ... When I get chest congestion I use Mucinex Maximum strength (DM) to help break it up besides cough meds ... Good Luck, and hope your feeling better real soon ... WPT ... (YAC) ...

Steve, Don't laugh at this but it will probably help all of you to breathe better. Get a bottle of Vick's vapor rub and prior to laying down at night and also if you are just laying around rub it on the bottom of your feet and put a pair of socks on. Sit in a recliner if possible and it will help clear the phlem in your throat and to get rid of the chest congestion. When I read about this I was very skeptical but just got over the sickness and I tried it and it worked. Jackie B.

I almost died from double bacterial pneumonia 8 years ago. It was bad. Real bad. I was coughing up large amounts of blood, puss and water, and blacking out when I did it. When I was sent home, to get enough oxygen two oxygen generators had to be installed, Y-corded together. It was three years before I could exert myself without coughing up blood, and a couple more before I could even start to hike and hunt. Even today, if I really exert myself, my lungs ache and burn. Even today an x-ray still shows a lot of scar tissue.

Do what you can to limit exposure to cold and cold moisture. Warm moisture is OK in moderation, like a brief steamy shower. But too much is bad, and so is going outside after breathing that much moisture. Cold air outside will make your lungs ache and eventually burn. Get a muffler or wool scarf to put over your mouth.

You'll probably not be up to getting a lot of exercise. This means you better watch your caloric intake. Cut back on food because you won't be able to burn it off. I'm not saying to diet or stop eating what you like. Just use portion control.

If you cannot do strenuous exercise, read up on isometric and aerobic exercise (use google).

Limit your exposure to solvents, dust and smoke of any kind.

Speaking of smoke, the doctor told me that if I had been a smoker I would not have made it. I'm glad I never even tried tobacco.

    EE- no longer smoke.
Jackie B- are you serious???? it probably works. my uncles elderly mother had elephanttitis of the legs. she was in alot of pain. the only thing that relieved it was a squirt of wd40. all her elderly friends used wd40. i thought they were crazy. i told my doctor, and he said alot of his elderly patients use wd40. he said there has to be something in it that relieves joint pain. i know this sounds like bs, but it's true.

What kind of pneumonia? Viral, bacterial, fungal, mycoplasma? Sounds contagious, since it went through an entire household, maybe the entire town. Washing hands and coughing away from others, in the crook of your arm may help to keep it from spreading.

A proper diagnosis is critical. That may include a culture, a microscopic specimen examination, X-Rays, and other methods as the attending physician determines appropriate. It is IMPORTANT to seek medical care, since some forms of pneumonia can be DEADLY. Swine Flu (H1N1) can be suspect also. Some types can be helped by the use of appropriate antibiotics. Some anti-flu drugs and antivirals may be effective. If the entire community is affected, then I think the doctors may have an idea of what is primarily going around. That does not mean everyone will have the same thing, just that the odds are such that it would be the same. In some cases, it's important to rule out an MRSA bacterial infection.

There are many things you can do, but a doctor's advice is the best. I have used Guaifenesin WITHOUT the DM. Dextromethorphan just suppresses the cough which inhibits your ability to cough up the phlegm. Drink plenty of fluids with it. Sometimes a steroid or anti-inflammatory inhaler will help. Your doctor can advise you. Stay away from codeine or narcotic cough suppressants. They can cause more difficulty in breathing.

For prevention, there is a vaccine, but it is limited in which type of pneumonia it will help prevent. As I mentioned before, washing hands and not coughing or sneezing on people seems to be a great idea. Dispose of used tissues properly. Hand sanitizers seem to help a bit too.

My cousin died from Pneumonia a few years ago. She was quite healthy and fit before it hit her. She was not a smoker, ate healthy, wasn't overweight, and exercised regularly. She ignored it and sought help when it was too late. It took over and she died almost overnight.

Did I mention, go see a doctor? If your symptoms get much worse or don't improve, get help right away. Don't fool around with it.

Usually, you should start to feel better within two or three weeks, but it could take substantially longer with some forms of pneumonia. Some people with other health issues could take longer to improve.

Speaking of Viruses, how did you make out with your Mom's computer?

I was pretty sick for a while, then the erythromycin kicked in and I improved pretty quickly. I had no lung damage. No oxygen after the ten day hospital stay.
No recurrence. Get flu and pneumonia shots. About what others have said.

The Vicks thing does work and works rather quickly as a matter of fact, I would also put some on your chest to help loosen the congestion and help clear the nasial passages ... WPT ... (YAC) ...

    Steve,

The Viral ones are usually gone within a month, depending on what virus. If it is the H1N1, it could linger a bit longer before you feel better. Just be sure to consult the doctor if any symptoms get worse. If anything deteriorates quickly, get help right away. Sometimes a secondary infection could take hold and take over. Last pneumonia I had was a Mycoplasma. Took a month+ and some strong antibiotics before I was done with it. I started to feel better within a few days of starting the antibiotics, but it took awhile for it to go completely.

I just cleaned a PC system for a friend. I have captured the bug and will save it for someone I really don't like. It was a real bad one. Unfortunately, the Geek Squad and similar outfits don't always do the trick. They miss a LOT of stuff they should have been able to remove. That's probably why it came back. It wasn't fully removed in the first place. These bugs can get in from anywhere. This one was a relative sending jokes and videos by email. The system was not updated properly (Java), had a big bloated Security Suite that was taken over by the bug. It actually helped spread it and protected it from removal. Usually it's the gaming sites, porn sites, emails, or any other legitimate site that has been compromised. It happens. A little bit of bad code in the right place will usually take down a vulnerable system. If it persists, send me a PM and I'll see what I can do for you.

    Regards,

    Carl
