I asked for some opinions recently about rebluing this Ithaca.

I decided to try and reblue the barrels myself using the slow rust blue technique.

It was very rewarding and pretty easy, hope you like the run-through below.

    Here is before:

Here is during, stripped and polished from 220 to 320 to 400 grit with oil as lubricant.

Rusting in the bathroom, with humidifer & space heater, got the room to 85F/75%RH

Rusted and ready for scalding with boiling distilled water

Carding Wheel (this was a great purchase from Brownells)

repeated four times and ..... DONE!

    Hi there,
That looks great! what kind of comments came from the wife about shotgun parts hanging in the bathroom? I'd never hear the end of it!
    Again, nice job!

Thanks! The chemical used was Laurel Mountain Barrel Brown and Degreaser, which is essentially Nitric Acid with some additional ingredients to speed and ease the process. This browns the barrel and the boiling distilled water changes the brown rust to a form that is black.

I bought the gun with the receiver like this. I have no idea whether it has been redone - although I doubt it would be this colorful after 90 years.

Wife was pretty cool about it because the whole operation has no smell!

    Joe
