Gateway T&S located in Clinton, IA will close the gates on 30 April 2012. Due to liability concerns from our parent company we have been given directions to cease operations by the end of the month.

The club was built by the original plant members in 1986 with seed money from management. All work was done by the members except for the concrete pours for the two trap houses and the installation of our light poles.

Our last day of shooting, the 28th of April, will be for members only.

We want to thank the members and public that shot at our club through the years. I also personally want to thank Trench12 (Terry), BigEd (Ed) and The Plumber (Jerry) for their assistance throughout the years. We also want to thank “Uncle Milt” for his photography journaling our club’s functions. I’m over 70 and my memory is shot, so if I’ve left anyone out, believe me, I’m sorry and I have appreciated your help!

There weren’t too many shooters left from the plant but with the over 75 “outside” members we were able to keep our head above the water. All 2012 members either have or will have their dues returned.

I believe we provided a nice, almost clean, clubhouse that was warm in the winter and cool in the summer. Our members donated both time and money to better the club and we greatly appreciated their help.

As we didn’t have a street address our GPS co-ords are 41.48’07.37” and -90.17’19.85”. Have a look on Google Earth, it was a nice little two holer!

    Respectfully submitted: Harry Craig

    President George Sills (lju)

    V Pres Paul Winkler (wink)

    Treasurer Paul Thompson

Secretary Henry Harrison Craig V (butch’s90t)

It's always a sad day when any club has to close it's traps.

Oh man that sucks! I shot there several times with Equistar for the annual "grudge match". Good food, good targets, and good fellowship! And I got to join the Harry the Hammer fan club!

I figured that it wouldn't be too long after they shut down Equistar that they would get to you. When they closed Equistar we were able to absorb them into our club for their league. It's worked out pretty well for us/them!

So many clubs have had to close or move in this area! Oak Lawn gunclub, Blue Park, Lincoln Park, Whiting trap club. And those don't count the clubs that moved.

It was good shooting with you guys, Yours and all clubs that close are sorely missed. Rick Gibbs

It would be nice to know the answer to Brian's question.

WA state is about to lose a lot of Hunter Ed instructors over perceived "Liability" concerns!

Brian to answer your question it was a liability concern. The club is actually on company property, and our company has a policy that prohibits firearms on company property. We've kinda been "Grandfathered" in for some time but the axe has finally fallen.

We've had a good run with a lot of great memories (those can't be taken away) over a span of 25 years.

    Iju,

Sounds like there should have been a meeting of the minds between the company and the club.

Not knowing if that occurred or not. But 25 years has some president in a judges mind had it gone to court. You probably would have won out on the long end.

Unless you came across a crooked judge.

The conmpany does not have to have any libility if it leases the property to the organization as far as I know.

I would guess there was a change in personnel that hatched an agenda.

Talk to a lawyer and try to find a workaround.

Here's one more post from our last day at the club. It was a miserably cloudy, cold and generally crappy day, but it dampen the spirits of all that came out. We had a good time remembering the good days we've spent there. A big thanks to Milt for his usual excellent picture skills! Please enjoy a few final pics from our last day at the club.

On Google Earth the club appears to be on property next to Equastar Chemical LP. And, the firing line faces away from that plant....you'd have thought an arrangement could have been made that would render liabilities a non-issue unless some "suit" in Texas just doesn't care to listen to reason.....and it looks like a very nice cozy layout.

Was thye company paying the liability insurance, or the club. If club was paying it they could have gotten a umbrella coverage and gave a copy of it to the Company, so they were protected. Or had a contract drawn up between the cpmpany and gun club.

And a waiver guns allowed only on gun club grounds.
