What is the best way to make safe a 391 after you have set the release trigger?

Reach across with you left hand and open the bolt slightly.

What Bad303 said. (1) You pull the bolt handle back about halfway,(2) release the trigger,(3) THEN let go of the bolt handle and the bolt will close. You're now ready to reset the trigger. If you don't pull it back quite far enough the worst that will happen is the hammer will drop when you release the trigger but the firing pin won't hit the primer. You'll know you did that because the bolt will be closed but you won't be able to reset the trigger. You will have to pull the bolt back again, re-insert the ejected shell, and let it close. Now you're ready to set the trigger again.

Don't get confused and pull the bolt handle back, release it and then pull the trigger. The gun will fire. Also, always make sure you have firm pressure on the trigger while reaching around to pull back the bolt handle. Relaxing the trigger finger is the number one cause of those accidental discharges. And for sure:

ALWAYS KEEP THE GUN POINTED DOWNRANGE.
