I just received this in an email from the Shotgun Sports Magazine publishing manager. Good ideas!

    _________

Put me in charge of food stamps. I’d get rid of Lone Star cards; no cash for Ding Dongs or Ho Ho’s, just money for 50-pound bags of rice and beans, blocks of cheese and all the powdered milk you can haul away. If you want steak and frozen pizza, get a job.

Put me in charge of Medicaid. The first thing I’d do is to get women Norplant birth control implants or tubal ligations. Then, we’ll test recipients for drugs, alcohol, and nicotine and document all tattoos and piercings (which increase the chances of dangerous infections and things like hepatitis). If you want to reproduce or use drugs, alcohol, smoke or get tats and piercings, get a job.

Put me in charge of government housing. Ever live in a military barracks? You must maintain our property in a clean and good state of repair. Your “home” will be subject to inspections anytime and possessions will be inventoried. If you want a plasma TV or Xbox 360, get a job and your own place.

In addition, you will either present a check stub from a job each week or report to a “government” job. It may be cleaning the roadways of trash, painting and repairing public housing, whatever we find for you. We will sell your 22 inch rims and low profile tires and your blasting stereo and speakers and put that money toward the “common good.”

Before you say I’ve violated someone’s rights, realize all of the above is voluntary. If you want our money, accept our rules... Before you say this would be “demeaning” and ruin their “self-esteem,” consider it wasn’t that long ago taking someone else’s money for doing absolutely nothing was demeaning and lowered self-esteem. Maybe it's time to bring back some good old personal responsibility.

If we are expected to pay for other people’s mistakes we should at least attempt to make them learn from their bad choices. The current system rewards people for continuing to make bad choices.

i like your idea. however, i think that it'll upset, severely, 20% to 30% of the population. are you sure that you've thought this idea all of the way through? good luck with it

AverageEd in the immortal writings of Ayn Rand, "I don't recognize you need as a valid claim on my property"!

I believe it is time for Francisco d'Anconia to go to work.

Do you suppose that MoveOn.Org will post that for you? Maybe Huffington will run it as a poll to see what their public thinks. Personally I like it, a lot.

The only things you forgot are stop all foreign aid until we get something equal back. If they are here from some where else learn our culture and language speak it or leave. The sooner the better. There that should upset some more of them. Paul in Nebraska.

Well said, Ed! I'm hoping (hope does spring eternal, I think) some of our elected leaders will grow a set of balls and start doing something about all the money that is wasted in this country. Hell, I'd rather them go to a casino and choose either red or black on the roulette table than do what's going on now. At least we would have close to a fifty-fifty chance of winning! This way things are done now, no one wins!

I look forward to seeing you in the New Year!
