Still cleaning out and thought this would be the best place to get some info on obsolete powder. I have three partial cans of 1# powder made by Winchester. They are: 13 oz of 630, 15+ oz of 540 and 13.7 oz of 571. What were these powders for or where could I get load data for them? Thanks, Tom Rhoads

Old Winchester powders are still being made by Hodgdon powder co. Winchester 540 is the same as HS-6. HMB

    From a 9/78 Winchester guide.
630 is for rifle and pistol
540 and 571 are for shotshell.

Send me a P M with what you load and I'll see if it is listed in the guide.

Give me a day ot two to search through my OLD books and I will try to fine the Winchester data book that might have some info. If I can find it, I will try to scan the relevant info and send it on down.

    Found the old books.

630 is a OLD powder, last shown in the Winchester from 1976. It is only shown in rifle cases for 30 M1 Carbine, 32-20 Winchester and 45-70 and a fair number of pistol cases. It will take me a day or two to get the scans for the actual loading data for the 630 powder.

The 540 was a powder used in shotgun loads for mid-range (mostly 1 1/4 with a few 1 1/8 oz loads. 571 was more of a slow burning magnum and heavy shotshell load powder. Both were listed in the last Winchester book I have. That book is from 1992. Again it will take a day or two for me to get the data scanned.

    540-571 Data

    630 data

The 540 and 571 Data is for Winchester Compression formed cases only. All of the other cases listed are no longer in manufacture. The data came from the 1992 data book put out by Winchester. That is the newest Winchester book I had.

The 630 Data came from the 1976 Winchester Loading Data book. 630 was not listed in any later versions of the Winchester books I had.

These are pdf documents. The 630 document has three pages but the 540-571 is only one page.

    Good Luck.
