How will London hold the pistol shooting events in there country when handguns are banned? I recently saw an interview with their olympians talking about how they cannot even practice in England because of the ban.

Pistol ban is relaxed for 2012 Olympics

    Updated: 07/09/08 6:58 AM

LONDON (AP) — The British government relaxed gun laws Tuesday to allow shooting teams to prepare for the 2012 London Olympics.

Britain banned handguns in 1997 after the massacre of 16 children and a teacher at a primary school in Dunblane, Scotland. The law includes a ban on guns for licensed sports, preventing domestic pistol events.

But Home Secretary Jacqui Smith has invoked special exemptions in England and Wales. A similar exemption allowed pistols for the 2002 Commonwealth Games in Manchester.

Sports Minister Gerry Sutcliffe said the government would make sure that competitors and officials can “possess their special competition pistols for the duration of the games and for any special warm-up events.”

I travel to the UK regularly on business (and for hunting).

I have been told that the shooting facilities will be newly constructed on military bases. At the end of the games these facilities will most likely be bulldozed.

By being on military land there is a 'loop hole' that will allow the firearms to enter the country - long guns are allowed in the UK with a simple visitor's permit (it can take months to get one), pistols will be the issue, but again, by limiting the shooting to military bases there is some method which will allow for this.

Should just tell England to stick it and hold the Olympics elsewhere.
