A customer wanted a pistol grip and modified fore are for this side by side double barrel shotgun... ( the barrel is 20 inches long) It is a work in progress but it is going to be a dangerous beauty when the shaping is complete!

No it does not need a permit as the lenght is 20+ inches and it came straight from the factory.
    Good question though!

Tough to say from the pics, but in addition to 18"+ barrels, it needs to be 26"+ OAL. Looks like it should get there from the pic, but something to keep in mind.

I went to a BATF seminar a couple of months ago. You better read the regs real close. This should be listed in the "other" category . There's lots of gray area when it comes to this kind of weapon. Ian has it right on lengths, but the other category should be in effect

    high2,

This does not qualify as an AOW (any other weapon) as long as the barrels are 18" in length and the overall length is 26". Now if either measurement is less than that, it becomes an AOW. However, it does not qualify for the $5 transfer, it would be the $200 transfer because the gun did not come from the facory with a pistol grip.

I am a former Class 3 dealer and have dealt with many AOW's.

    What Oscar said.

I also sold Title II Arms before the '86 ban. It had better be a hair over 26" OAL. Chances are, some small town cop will give the owner grief over this gun.

We have had several folks get arrested for possession of a SBR in a nearby small town (Gallatin, Tn), which were simply a Draco pistols.

Cases got dropped, but still legal fees, and paperwork to get in the system to keep from getting denied on future gun purchases.

Yup. And I'd suggest measuring the rear of the grip perpendicular to the bore, and that line must be 26" from the muzzle. When splitting hairs the feds and cops will always try to shave things to their advantage.
