Question for Phoenix area shooters ?

Assumed you liked to spend a whole day shooting trap at a leisurely pace without waiting a lot when the mood struck you to get out of your comfortable range chair and step up to the line.

Assume you lived in south Scottsdale, down near Tempe (a move being considered).

MapQuest says it is 33 or so miles to Ben Avery.

MapQuest says it is 53 miles to Casa Grande.

Don't know of any other bona fide trap ranges in the area.

I am not very familiar with the daily traffic patterns in Phoenix (though I have visited a few times and seen some pretty bad traffic) and don't know which would be a more routinely painful drive.

Given the trap range once you get there, and the pain of driving in Phoenix, which direction would you head -- Ben Avery or Casa Grande ?

I lived 20 years in Mesa, Chandler and Fountain Hills but live today in Prescott. Ben Avery is a really great place but have never been to Casa Grande. Thing is if your heading Southeast down I10 in the morning much of the traffic will be coming the other way. Going up to Ben Avery will involve taking the 101 to I17, will be busy but after you get to I17 should be quick to Ben Avery at the Carefree hwy exit. My guess is Ben Avery will take less time even with the morning commute traffic. Joe

    I am from Tucson,

    Look up Rio Salado(?)

Also look up Globe Miami trap club, It may be closer to 60 - 70 miles but I think you would be looking at favorable traffic patterns.

Or for a longer trip there is my home club Tucson Trap and skeet.
From Phoenix I would look at the route that takes you off I-10 at Avra Valley Rd to Sandario.

Thanks for the information on Rio Salado.

Looks like Rio Salado is 28 miles on the 202.

The range closes at 5 PM every day according to its website.

Would have thought that the evenings would be a popular time to shoot in Arizona.

Per MapQuest, Globe is 88 miles.

I shot at the Tucson range last year during the Spring Grand last year.

It certainly is a premier facility.

I use to belong to that club, by the looks of the web site they have really expanded since I left. With the 202 going east it might be a real good bet. Joe

It just depends on what form of trapshooting you enjoy.....practice, games, league and/or registered. Rio Salado is a very nice and friendly place that has some league type shooting during the day and the rest is pretty much practice.

I live in the south central area of Scottsdale and I go the Ben Avery Clay Target Center. They do everything there and both are equally distant from me and they are open 7 days a week.

Can someone tell me who to contact to join the Rio Salado league? I think I'd like to do that this winter.

Arizona needs a good 5 trap club that is serious about offering both league and registered shooting. There are certainly enough shooters in the Phoenix area for that and they could join the winter chain easily.

Camping for the snow birds would be a must too. I think it would not hurt Ben Avery or Rio Salado at all. It would only be a good thing for the trapshooting community in Phoenix.

Ben Avery offers everything You could want as a Clay Target Shooter. They have plenty of practice traps They throw Registered targets at least once a month in the Fall, Winter and Spring, they do have a league available but is in dire need of a "Trap League" the Board of Directors for the ClayBusters which oversees the Wednesday night Leagues is comprised of mostly Skeet, and Sporting Clays Shooters, with little regard for Trap Shooters. There has been talk of starting a Saturday Morning or Thursday evening League for Trap but is in need of a few more People to help get it rolling and keep it running.

Rio Salado is Great place for Shooting as well, it has 1 Trap and a Sporting Clays course the People are very Friendly and offer Practice Daily and a Pot Shoot once a Month but no Registered targets.

Tucson is another Great Facility with Everything a Clay Target Shooter could want. It is a clean and very Shooter Friendly Facility that has plenty of Practice traps and throws Registered targets. They hold the Autmn and Spring Grands and this years AZ. State shoot, I have seen flyers down there for league Shooting but do not know the particulars for thier leagues.

Casa Grande is a Trap and Skeet facility and also throws Registered targets.

I didn't know they shoot skeet at Casa Grande ..? The last time I was down there they didn't have a skeet field ...

Ben Avery has every shooting venue you could think of except shooting cans, (probably a bad joke) ... Pistol, rifle, shotgun, bow and arrow you name it they got it ...

Barry, your right start it up and I'm sure you will have plenty of business ... Location, Location, Location, I think the good one is taken ...

Tucson is the biggest club in Arizona with all of the expansion that has taken place ... I have not shot there in quite a long time but heard its come a long way and is top shelf ... WPT ... (YAC) ...

League shooting with 5 man teams on a round robin schedule would be a boon to the shooting sports in PHX. This is a great feeder for registered shooting and also gets hunters to try clay targets without the intimidation of registered tournaments.

I went to the Spring Grand and winter chain for 20 years, starting at the Litchfield club, now extinct. If I lived in the area I would be glad to help with such a venture.

PM me for advice and league structure.

There was talk some time ago of a fellow or fellows looking to build a trap facility in the east valley, then the housing market crashed. I have no isea of where they were thinking for location.

To answer you question, Barry above has covered everything you need to know. Great area, enjoy it while we can, Bob

There was some talk at one time about opening a club out west just north of I-10 west of the Loop 101, nothing ever became of it ... WPT ... (YAC) ...

Looking at the Red Mountain club on googleEarth, they have taken buildings out and all the sidewalks are gone.

We need a place with a Club like feel. A place to get lunch, have a game of cards and some camaraderie as well as some shooting. Just my opinion and, being selfish, I'd like it a little closer. For all these reasons, I'd like to have a smaller club as an option.

In my home town back in Illinois we have a little two trap club. Within 45 miles of there there are probably another 10 or so trapshooting clubs. All do well and have their own "personalities" and different programs.

I can't imagine that another little club like that would hurt a huge all inclusive venue like Ben Avery.
