Our sport is full of surprises and sometimes you just don’t know who you’re going to meet or shoot with. The other day I received a call for a guy saying “would it be ok if I brought Phil Ross out to our club to shoot"? I thought THE PHIL ROSS who broke the 25th grand slam in ATA History (according to the November Trap & Field). I said sure come on out. So a couple of days later I saw him pull up and he introduced himself and right away I remembered watching him as a kid at the grand during the 70’s in shoot off’s under the light. I guess Phil has been away from the sport because of his health, but he seems to be on the path of recovery teaching shooting once again. Just by talking with Phil about shooting gives you the confidence needed to be a great shooter (if you want it bad enough). Talking with him has giving me new excitement to improve my shooting in all areas. The one thing many of us in Southern California know is that Phil was the last person to break a 100 straight at Oaktree Gun Club. Phil, you know the Handicap Jackpot is your for the taking again.

    Phil,

Glad to hear you are back. Seems like a 100 years ago that we shot together at the Grand. That squad also had Darvin T, Bobby G, and I think Robert M on it if I remember right. Good luck on your return. Dexter

    Hey Dexter,
Yes it's been a long time. Bobby Gilbertson, and I still keep in touch.
He is fine, and still living near Modesto, Cal.

Phil Ross, glad you're back and willing to help other shooters guy!!

First time I ever saw your dad was at the old Golden Valley GC at Pacoima. I was a new to ATA shooter at the time and knew who the top shooters in southern Ca. were. I'd met Jim Murphy at Palmdale at a prior shoot and only knew what your dad looked like from other shooters describing him to me.

There were two 100s in singles on the board when I took the line that day, George Ross and Jim Murphy. As I changed stations from 5 to 1, there behind the trap was Jim M. and a man dressed in all black with a cowboy hat watching our squad shoot!! I totally lost it! Missed my 91st bird and settled in to win class B with a 99. Both congratulated me after we finished our last round and I always had a great admiration for both of those men! Glad to see your back and sharing your knowledge guy!!! Hap

PS, you still have those model 12s?
