Union Sportsmen Describe Why They Back Obama

American Federation of Labor - Congress of Industrial Organizations Copyright

Martin Marks, Pennsylvania political communications specialist, sends us this report from Erie, Pa.

Stormy weather didn’t stop a group of more than 50 union sportsmen from shooting in the Pennsylvania AFL-CIO Working Families Trap Shoot Finals at the Bay City Gun Club in Waterford, outside of Erie on Saturday afternoon. And it didn’t dampen the enthusiasm these union gun owners and hunters have for Sen. Barack Obama.

Jack Fischer, president of the Erie-Crawford Central Labor Council, puts it this way:

There is a lot of nonsense out there about Barack Obama taking our guns. Working folks from our area are a lot more worried about John McCain shipping away our jobs.

Gun ownership has been a wedge issue used in recent elections by Republican candidates and their extremist allies to distract blue-collar voters from the bread-and-butter economic issues that matter to working families. But, at a roundtable discussion on the election prior to Saturday’s trap shoot, participants said hunters wouldn’t be dissuaded from focusing on economic issues by right-wing distortions of Obama’s record on guns.

Pennsylvania AFL-CIO Secretary-Treasurer Rick Bloomingdale says:

Obama’s support of the Second Amendment is crystal clear. The truth of the matter is that George W. Bush and his failed economic policies have taken away more guns from average Americans than any gun control law ever passed in the history of the United States. The disastrous Bush economic policies supported by John McCain have turned pawn shops into gun shops as struggling workers hock their guns to pay their bills.

Timothy Helper, business agent for the Electrical Workers (IBEW) Local 56 based in Erie, underscored the importance of protecting the traditions he and other sportsmen value but says voters must stay focused on their pocketbooks.

We come from an area where it is not uncommon for schools to close on the opening day of deer season and for local papers to give as much attention to their town’s trap shooting team results as high school football scores. Gun issues are important to us but we will not let right-wing rhetoric distract us from the critical pocketbook issues most important to our families.

    Not to worry.

The Union will certainly use some of their hard earned dues to hire attorneys and lobbyists to fight for their Second Amendment right when the time comes.

    Or then again…maybe NOT!

Are any of the actual 50 "sportsmen" here to tell us why they could stab gun owners in the back with those lies?

And He supports our troops too!

"According to Iraqi Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari, Obama made his demand for delay a key theme of his discussions with Iraqi leaders in Baghdad in July.

"He asked why we were not prepared to delay an agreement until after the US elections and the formation of a new administration in Washington," Zebari said in an interview.

Obama insisted that Congress should be involved in negotiations on the status of US troops - and that it was in the interests of both sides not to have an agreement negotiated by the Bush administration in its "state of weakness and political confusion."

"However, as an Iraqi, I prefer to have a security agreement that regulates the activities of foreign troops, rather than keeping the matter open." Zebari says.

Though Obama claims the US presence is "illegal," he suddenly remembered that Americans troops were in Iraq within the legal framework of a UN mandate. His advice was that, rather than reach an accord with the "weakened Bush administration," Iraq should seek an extension of the UN mandate."

Obama is as anti gun as they get! In the Union I am it the work is on a Defense contract. Well over half are former and retired military and most of the rest are hunters and shooters. Kind of a shame on who they support, as of all the candidates, only Palin's husband in a union guy who enjoys getting his hands dirty, and Palin is the only one who is a Life Member of the NRA. We do know that Palin hunts, fish, and been known to shoot a shotgun.

Biden has a history of pushing anti-gun laws in the Senate and Obama helped fund anti-gun groups when he was on the board of the Joyce Foundation.

I wonder when the 3 guys quoted in the article actually drew a paycheck as a worker as opposed to being a bureaucrat for their unions?

The funny part is that I can find no part of Obama's plan that actually helps union workers. By example, he is for NAFTA and othe free trade agreements.

It seems that his major program is to provide universal healthcare for everyone. Now, most union members already have healthcare which they rightfully earn by their labor. So who do you suppose is going to pay for that healthcare for everyone else? Yep, by those of us who work for a living.

This isn't hard folks. Obama's socialism for those who don't work can only be paid for by those who do work.

PS: If you think your Business Agent is working, ask him what his golf handicap is.

"enthusiasm these union gun owners and hunters have for Sen. Barack Obama."
Do union members think or do they just do what they are told by union bosses?

Union leadership focuses on: #1 preserving and enhancing the flow of union dues from the members in order to pay union leadership salaries and #2 maintaining membership to support #1.
Obama will do both #1 and #2...meanwhile confiscating/outlawing all firearms to keep his promises to the anti-gun lobby.
If these are "sportsmen" and Obama gets in, they will be sportsmen without firearms, for sure. Best Regards, Ed

It is not an accident that this event was in PA. Obama's campaign has a "Sportsmen for Obama" front, and they know his presidential ambitions may well end in that state (you know, the old bitter clinger thing). They're well aware of the cultural affinity for guns there, and they know this event will get Big Time media attention.

    Why do this?

My guess is, somewhere in PA (or Michigan, or Ohio), there is a Joe Sixpack kinda guy who was never very good at school (short attention span, they said), but he liked to shoot, liked working on his car and was good with his hands. Unfortunately, he wasn't very good at keeping his pants zipped, so he knocked up his high school girlfriend, and whatever bigger dreams he may have had got quashed in those 3 minutes. The family chipped in to give them the compulsory honeymoon to Gatlinburg, and since then, the closest he's come to a real vacation (outside that weekend of banging hookers in Vegas during a Union meeting) is his annual week-long Vienna-sausages-around-the-campfire Deer Hunting Trip. And it's only because of his "Union Wages," he deduces, that he's able to afford that.

So, the days of titty bars are mostly over for this erstwhile small-town stud. These days, it's all he can do to keep a roof over his family's head, food (and lotto tickets) on the table, the cable bill paid, his Harley Davidson payment up to date, and have enough left over for a few new Xbox games at the end of the month.

If this "Obama Trapshooting Event" can give just 3 such guys "permission" to think they can vote for Obama and still consider themselves good sportsmen, then the event will have achieved its purpose.

That's the sort of low-brow mentality we're after, and you can trust that Obama's "Bitter Clinger Division" knows just how to get them.

No one has done more damage to the union members than Bill Clinton. NAFTA the China trade agreement. And yet on the first post it's stated that Jack Fischer says working people are more afraid of John McCain shipping away there jobs. A little late for that id say. Bill Clinton took care of that. Now instead of products saying union made it says made in China. Then they try to pass the blame on the Bush economic policies. The damage was done back in the 90's now it's catching up.

And yet some not all union members by this theory hook line and sinker because thats what there preached to at the union meeting.

Wow, I wonder how many of the shooters at that event realized it would be used as a pro Obama propoganda event?

I know my fellow shooters in NW PA, and while they are certainly concerned about their jobs AND their firearms, they are NOT pro-Obama.

I don't recognize any of the names in the article, so I'm sure they aren't NW PA trapshooters.

I'll be interest to see what any Bay City members think when they read this article, and how they respond to it.

    ~Michael
