What factors determine the choice between an Unsingle and a Top Single?

Sometimes the difference is that an unsingle has an adjustable rib, while a top single usually doesn't. I'm sure there are exceptions to this. Mark

Recoil and mirage are the two major ones in my opinion.

Mirage is heat shimmer rising from a hot barrel on a hot day that distorts your view of the target. You need a moderately high rib on a top single, or an unsingle to reduce or remove it.

Or a wet towel to wipe the barrel between stations.

MTA Tom What? Never have I seen or have heard of anyone whiping down a warm shotgun barrel with a wet towel. I would like to know what the towel would be
    wetted with?

    Thanks Jason in PA

The towel hanging on a lot of shooters belts during hot weather shooting is wetted down with good old water.

I seen Nora Martin Ross wipe her Sietz barrel down after each shot at a couple of Grands in Ohio. I don't know if towel was wet but she did it. The weather was hot as hell.
