Trappy if you look at the budget you'll learn that entitlement programs consume more funds than anything else. Compared to social security and the numerous social welfare programs, The defense budget is not that big.

IMHO the Gov't can't spend enough on our boys and girls-EVERY one of them is under-paid and under-equipped. The major waste problem, as I see it(and saw it in the 60's), is the way things are spec'd. Can't just go to Sears and buy a screwdriver, has to be made just so. Thus you end up with $200 screwdrivers and $400 toilet seats.
This has been brought to you by a veteran with a son who is a career Infantry officer...

My guess is that if in fact you'd spent any time in our armed services, you'd know the answer, and wouldn't have posed the question. Our troops NEED and DESERVE every cent we can raise for them. Pretty bad when you see service members using food stamps to get by.

This from a USAF, MSgt (Ret).

Yes, it is terribly sad seeing service members using food stamps (but thank god they have that option). It is also sad seeing them have to salvage armor from the battlefield to protect themselves.

The thing that bothers me is...the money is there...but how much gets wasted by these idiot politicians? How much did we spend on that worthless missile defense system that works 1/2 the time? How much have we spent chasing WMDs that did not exist?

My god...if we would have ignored Iraq...spent all that money & troop energy after the perpetrators of 9/11, Al Qaeda would be dead. Saddam would STILL be an impotent buffer between the radical leaders of Iran (note: leaders, not citizens) from the moderate islam arabs that are our allies. We wouldnt have to face up to the fact that we were lied to, we might not have such a secretive gov't in which Dick Cheney doesnt believe the VP is a part of the Executive Branch, we might not even be seeing this public discontent for sending our troops in harms way for a political agenda.

Yes...our troops deserve every cent they can get. And I think perhaps we should stop giving so much to Blackwater, KBR, and Halliburton. And pay attention to the waste our politicians (right or left) is creating with their idiocy.

Those that havent served should make no comment

Those that wont post their names should not comment on a topic like this if they attack someone else

There is nothing out of kilter with the military budget - with the exception that we do need to keep spending R&D money and keep force protection funding high

    regards from Iowa

GN77777, why don't you go back to the other thread and finish what you started before going to another thread and trash it.

They need to give the troops more money and more equipment.

Oh by the way GN777777, I was not in the military but I will not have a punk like you tell me that I can or can not make a post on or about the military.

The problem is always the same! WHERE THE MONEY GOES!
If you have to cut costs, human lives are cheap in comparison to equipment. Take any of the Air-wing divisions of the military they fry those guys if they screw up and break a plane or helicopter.

I was in the Corps 97-01 and Clinton cut so much that we barley did any live fire exercises when the A$$HOLE was sending us to every flare-up in the world.

First to go! Last to know!
AND NEVER HAVE WE HAD SUITABLE GEAR NOR TECHNOLGY!
Marines are the "GETR DONE" of the military!
We are the cheapest killers in the world. The meat grinders.

The old dogs said, the best time to be in the Military was the Reagan years!
He loved the Corps and the guys that served under him loved him.

Trappy, The so called smart weapons you mentioned Is what lets us do more with less. It also helps to keep valuable resources and personnel out of harms way while keeping the enemy's critical resources at risk. The JSF is designed to take full advantage of the cutting edge smart technology. Smart technology is even being incorporated into ground based systems to increase the probability of 1st shot kills. It's the way of the future and we damned well better be ready.

Jim I am not against all the new technologies, but I am a firm believer that first shot kills is a training issue.
In Fallugah II they brought in an investigation team trying to figure out why there were so many headshot kills on terrorists. They discovered that there were no assasanations, like they thought, they were Marine Kills. This information was on Frontline/PBS.

Lets quit picking on Trappy. After all he is very young and has no real world experience to counter the pie in the sky liberalism of the press and educational systems in this country. Remember the adage: "If your not liberal when you're young you have no heart. But if you are not conservative when you're older you have no brain".

    Gentlemen:

What makes a country is the strength of its enemy!!!!!

What use is there developing a brand new high-tech mousetrap when there are no longer any mice????

Of what use are weapons when you no longer have an enemy to use them on???

The dangers of the "military industrial complex" is when they "create" an enemy where none exsists!!!

You as a nation were "WARNED" of this long ago by your own generals and politicions!!!!

When your budget "increases" each and every year,,,you must find an excuse to "USE" that budget to its last cent,,,otherwise,,the next year it will be smaller because you didn't use it!!! Now thats how it works in the real world!!!

Again,,,,a brand new century has begun!!!! And how did you good folks start it off???? WAR!!!!!!!!!! RELIGION!!!!!!!!!!! The same "baggage" carried around from the ages!!!!!!!!!

Our best and brightest are not working on medical advances!!!! Our cutting edge technology is based on WAR!!!! War that will give us an enemy to sustain the "military industrial complex" for the next 100 years!!! So we can continue to survive,,,so our econmy remains on track!!!

    AKA Grammie...........
