So we destroyed tens of thousands of surrended AK's and now bought tens of thousands of new ones? I wonder what that cost?

Tonight's news said they are missing 190 thousand weapons. Andy's link is the right one.

So how many Americans will die from American weapons? Of course, we have to fight nice, and not do naughty things to the enemy.

Competence is not a job qualification any more. They can let you use an ATM card on the other side of the world, and keep your bank balance perfectly correct. but somhow are unable to keep track of 90 Thousand weapons.

"We are all quite mad here", said the Cheshire Cat.

There is something in defense of this. This blows but I think we have to look at the way the system "works" over there. The guns are likely there some place. The problem you have is the tracking after they are issued. Guns come in, get cleaned and tested then go back out. The guys doing this in 03 would count the guns coming in and going out (lots of junk guns coming in, they were destroyed so the numbers were different). When this unit was relieved there was no hand off as there was nobody to take their place. The guns were still where they were issued but no record exists.
