    Hi there:
I've had the flu for about a week, just about gone. I blew my nose, really hard I guess, and when I went to look in the mirror, a little later, I saw a blood spot on the white part of my eye. Over the past couple of days it's spread out but doesn't seem to be getting any worse. It's just sore. This happened one other time this year when I was sick. Any advise? All I take is 20mg lipitor and a baby asprin and thats it. No high blood pressure. Thanks, Dave T.

Don't mess around with your eyes, see a doc.

When I was in 8th grade, I developed histoplasmosis, a fungus in the lungs that behaves like TB. The fungus causes a cough that cannot be satisfied and I coughed an extreme amount. This went on for over a month before it was diagnosed.

As a result of the coughing, whites of my eyes turned blood red from ruptured blood vessels. My parents were of modest income and I was admitted to a charity hospital for children. I was tested for many diseases and was put under so a biopsy could be performed on my lungs. All they could tell was that I definitely did not have TB. An old country doctor, who was treating another patient in a nearby room, was consulted and he recommended a test for histoplasmosis. Histoplasmosis is caused by 100 year old bird droppings and is common around chicken houses and caves where birds nest. I frequently crawled through many of the limestone caves and sinkholes common in Kentucky.

After taking medication for about a year, with my physical activity limited to a walk, both the histoplasmosis and whites of my eyes cleared up.

About 10 years ago, my wife suddenly developed a large black spot in one eye and seemed to be seeing a distorted image in the eye with the spot. We immediately went to a highly qualified eye surgeon, who diagnosed a partially torn retina. He treated it immediately with a laser and my wife underwent a couple of follow up treatments. Everything worked out fine but the surgeon said that she was very fortunate. If she had delayed, she probably would have lost the sight in the affected eye.

I woke up one morning a few years ago and one of my eyes had the red broken vessel thing. It scared hell out of me but went away with no complications. A doctor would not hurt but don't panic. I myself did not go to a doctor but that doesn't mean I should'nt have.

Just wondering, if you had not used the wooden spoon remedy how long would it take for the eye to clear?

I ruptured blood vessels in my eye while arm wrestling years ago and my vision was even fuzzy for a while. I also broke the vessels in the skin around my eyes and cheeks. It went away in a day or so, but I quit doing that crap. Older is wiser I guess.

It would have taken three days.

I've had this problem for several years happens to me two or three times a year and leaves about half my eye sort of blood red. Usually clears up in a couple of days. Went to an eye specialist and in my case she told me nothing she could do and that many factors can cause this such as: stress, rubbing the eye too hard, etc. etc. Just my experience. In your case I'd have it checked out if for nothing more than peace of mind. Tom

    Thanks Tom:
I'm going in on Monday. Just scaring me that this has happened twice within 6 months. Both times I was sick. And its my dominant shooting eye. Wouldn't know what to do if I lost that one. Dave T.
