PETA wants northwestern Wisconsin school to scrap hunting pictures

Wheeler News Service - Published Thursday, April 10, 2008

Animal rights activists want a northwest Wisconsin school to scrap a display showing off the dead animals students have hunted.

PETA, the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, says it's wrong to allow the student photos at Maple Northwestern Middle School, Poplar, Wis.

They’ve asked Principal Ken Bartelt to get rid of them.

PETA's Sangita Kumar says the hunting pictures glorify killing and that's dangerous at a time of war in the Middle East and school shootings throughout America.

Bartelt says the display is not going anywhere. He says it's wrong for PETA to equate hunting with gun violence.

Hunting is so engrained in Wisconsin's culture, Bartelt says it's like telling kids to stop rooting for the Green Bay Packers.

You might remember that PETA criticized the Packers a few years ago, saying they glorify the killing of animals for food. They said the team should be renamed the “Pickers.”
