If you are one the fence over climate change(cap and trade) this will send you to one side or the other.

My mind was made up long time ago over this political issue!

Everybody's mind is already made up on this one...but nobody's opinion here counts. Here's my worthless one.

Developed economies have mostly peaked out, and now that industrial production is going away as a source of tax revenue, they have to find a way to replace that revenue and fund their (considerable) welfare states.

Carbon taxation is the answer. Every joule, every kilowatt, every molecule, the carbon from every breath you take - just think of the possibilities if you're a public official. It's a perpetual, unending source of revenue, not subject to the waxing and waning of different industries or the cycles of the economy. Even in a recession - people still gotta heat their homes and power their computers, iPhones, and plasma TVs - the opiates of the masses, the goodies that give the serfs a reason to live. This is a revenue source the politicians can bank on.

But why the urgency? Because if you wait ten years, and the Earth starts cooling down on its own (which some observers believe is happening anyway), the Carbon-Taxers won't be able to take credit for it.

Think about the mathematics of cyclical, oscillatory systems. Do you purchase Gold, for example, when it's at its peak price? No, because it's bound to go down. Similarly, what better time to implement carbon taxation than when the Earth's temperature is at a "local maximum." It's bound to go back down sooner or later, and if you pass the taxes at the right moment, at the "peak" - you can take credit for any subsequent cooling that takes place! That's why the sense of urgency. They know they have a short window of opportunity, before the Earth starts cooling back down on its own and crushes their whole scam. They have to have the taxes in place, BEFORE the curve turns the corner (which some believe it may be doing right now). Then they can say, "Look, Cap and Trade worked - we averted a global crisis!" (never mind the fact that emissions will keep going up, because of new Chinese coal-powered plants).

This WILL happen, no matter what we hope or think. Carbon vouchers are an item of great value - after all, that's what our modern lives run on (unless we all want to go back to being hunter-gatherers). If you create a way for the Wall Street Assholes to make a profit off of trading Carbon, while Washington reaps the tax revenue - you have just defined a perpetual motion revenue machine that can never be stopped.

If you want to continue driving the "smokestack" jobs offshore such as the foundry business which I am in, then you should support and vote for this caper! If you want to double or more, your home energy bill, then you should also support this! Does anyone really think China and India are going to buy into this bullshit!? They have to be licking their chops over our wonderful liberal government! What is even scarier, the Steelworkers' union is supporting this?! Oh well, wtf?! Tom Rhoads
