Why would my through the wall one room heat pump come on occasionally even though it is turned off. When it comes on of its own accord it will run about ten minutes then shut down.

Had to be built by the same guy that made my wife's car.

Dead of winter, no radiator fans running, park the car, and turn it off, THEN the radiator fan starts running even though the coolant is cold.

    Live with it.

Sounds like the defrost control is miswired, yes they can be screwed up from the factory, try to time it, if it comes on everytime at a preset time ( 60 min 90 min or 120 min ) somewhere it is keeping the defrost control timer energized, so the unit thinks it is still running and it will initiate a defrost cycle, generally 10 minutes or less if terminated by a defrost thermostat

That's just a WAG, but very possibly is the problem, PTACs and window shakers use some wierd ways to do normal operations

Keeps the oil in the crankcase of the compressor spread on the walls of the cylinder preventing scoring if it sits too long.
