There is a new ap out for the ipad and iphones and maybe others. It's called Plane Finder AR. What it does is, when you a contrail in the sky or even just a plane way high up you start the ap and point your camera in the iphone toward the plane it will tell you the flight number, where the thing is going and it's speed along with how far it is away from you. Neet huh? The plane you are sighting has to have a beacon turned on and most commercial flights do. Next thing they need to do is figure out a way to track UFO's.

The price of the ap is only $2.99 so it's reasonable to just have fun with.

My son works for Google and he can't tell me what he is working on but he tells me you won't believe some of the things they have for the future.

Great, more people staring out into space not paying attention to what is happening on earth, and more than likely in front of me.

This does sound pretty cool. It is amazing what smart phones can do these days!

    Pretty cool.....

They could just be making up stuff. They could tell you it's American Airlines flight 7124 arriving in Bugtussel at 12:30 and you would never know the difference.

    Gary,

Your son works for Google! That's quite a prestigious job to have. Must be a smart kid.

Joe, Ya, smart for sure. He was not home schooled. He has a Doctorate in mathematics from MIT. He has a lot of trouble shooting a target or hammering a nail though.

If you knew what you were doing, you could do this without the iPhone/app combo and BEFORE it made its debut. ADS-B made it easy. You just needed a receiver for the data link. The iPhone app is not as accurate as the receiver, because there are extra steps inherent in Iphone app transmit/receive process that introduce a delay in the processing of the signal.
