Looking to buy a good used small outboard w/ an integral tank. Any makes to stay away from? Is 4 stroke worth the extra bucks on a small motor? Thanks for any commentary.

Stay away from anything air cooled. I would also steer clear of Chrysler (Montgomer Ward, Sears).

What state are you in.....a friend of mine has a 4HP Merc....he bought a 15 and has not used the Merc for a few years....located in NH....

It was only used in the spring to troll for Salmon on Lake Winnipesaukee....

I'll see what he wants for it...In any event what Tron said is good advise. Stay with Merc Johnson, Evinrude, Yammy, or Tohatsu

The Merc was a good little motor, especially the twin cylinder model. Another thing to consider would be an engine with Forward, Neutral AND Reverse. If you are anywhere that's weedy, the small engines really need that reverse gear to blow off the weeds as they build up on the prop.

Thanks for comments. In MN but depending on price I wouldn't mind paying shipping if he is willing to mess w/ shipping. Good thought on the F-N-R lever, Tron.
