    Olympic medalist wants tax-free payday

An Italian Olympic medalist is asking his government for a tax exemption on his reward money in a move that could convince other athletes to ask for special treatment from authorities.

Francesco D'Aniello, a police officer who won silver in double trap shooting on Tuesday, said the sacrifices athletes make justify his request.

"I would sincerely hope that the (Italian) parliament would pass this law," he told a news conference. "It would be the right thing to do to remove the taxes from what we get here," Reuters reported.

Italy is one of several countries that offer healthy financial payouts to those who succeed at the game, but the amount Mr. D'Aniello was not disclosed.

Greece pays gold medalists roughly US $277,000.
