In a box of old shells, I found some rifle cartridges that are unusual.

They are about 3 inches long, and appear to have a white, rubber projectile where the bullet should be.

On the base it reads "W.S.C.Co 30 ARMY"

    Any ideas?

Also have some that appear to be about the same diameter as a 38 casing, but are only about 3/4 inch long, and are rim fire, with a "U" on base?

    Thanks

The one with the u is made by Remington and is probably a 38 S&W rim fire. HMB

Your 30 army sounds like a 30-03 paper blank. I have some but their somewhat orange paper head.

The one marked 30 Army is an old 30-40 Krag.

You made me do some digging through a extensive collection of ammo. This is what he is talking about.

But who is WSC Co, I have never seen that headstamp? Even Cartridge Collectors doesn't list it.

Wilkinson Sword Company (WSC) once made guns.

I don`t know if they made ammo.

Maybe this will help, maybe not.

BT99 hit the nail on the head.

    .30 Army is .30-40 Krag.

The .30-03 is the predecessor of the .30-06. The neck is very slightly longer. You can safely shoot 30-06 in a 30-03 chamber. At one time I had a Winchester 1895 lever action factory chambered in 30-03. The 30-03 used the heavier 30-40 Krag bullet. The 30-06 was a redesign with a lighter bullet and tweaking to the neck length. There was also a rimmed 30-06 made around this time for the Winchester 1885 Single Shot for target use.

There have been other cartridges with the WSC headstamp turn up. Speculation is they were made by the Wilkison Sword Company because it is known they made bayonet and stamped WSC on them.

Now you guys have me wanting a Browning or Winchester 1895 carbine in 30-40. Excellent brush buster.

On further inspection, the .30 ARMY shell is a paper bullet, and the other letters on the head are --W R A Co.-- Maybe Winchester Repeating Arms??

Could not get real good pics, but here they are:

I have about 20 of the 30 ARMY, and a bunch of the others
