When did the "ventilated rib" first make its appearance? This is not a quiz, I'm looking for the answer. -John W.

And how about the first adjustable comb? Who did the first ones?

Adjustable comb - first seen by me when Arnold Reigger built-up the comb with layers of shell boxes on his single shot Winchester.

I believe that the first adjustable combs were done by a fellow from south eastern PA, by the name of Bill Pearce.

John, somewhere around 1909-1911. I believe Baker Single barrel trap
had the first vent rib. Hope this helps.

The rib is actually much much older, Joseph Manton earned the first English patent for what he called an "elevating rib" in about 1814.

Some shooting editors believe that ribs are "no more useful than bead sights. Ribs are more aesthetically pleasing, but when it comes to practical shooting, they donĀ“t ad a thing. (Michael McIntosh).

The ventilated rib is an American invention to prevent or minimize changes in impact if one barrel heats up more than the other. We know a vent rib allows air to flow under and over the barrel and allows it to cool quicker. Yet I have never read a report confirming if this works.

I think the original thread asked when the ventilated rib was introduced.

The first adjustable comb I saw was on a BT-99 shot by Frank Little. Frank did tell me that Bill Pearce as Ed posted above.
