I suggest saving this, then posting it whenever some moron claims Obama supports the Second Amendment and won't ban your guns.

*********

Senator Obama, quotes:

"Let's be honest. Mr. (Alan) Keyes does not believe in common gun control measures like the assault weapons bill. Mr. Keyes does not believe in any limits from what I can tell with respect to the possession of guns, including assault weapons that have only one purpose, to kill people. I think it is a scandal that this president (Bush) did not authorize a renewal of the assault weapons ban."

"The city of Chicago has gun laws, so does Washington, DC. The notion that somehow local jurisdictions can't initiate gun safety laws to deal with gangbangers and random shootings on the street isn't born out by our Constitution." (The "gGun safety laws" Obama is referring to are total handgun bans.)

"There's been a long standing argument by constitutional scholars about whether the second amendment referred simply to militias or it spoke to an individual right to possess arms. I think the latter is the better argument. There is an individual right to bear arms, but it is subject to common-sense regulation just like most of our rights are subject to common-sense regulation. So I think there's a lot of room before you getting bumping against a constitutional barrier for us to institute some of the common-sense gun laws that I just spoke about."

"I have always believed that the Second Amendment protects the right of individuals to bear arms, but I also identify with the need for crime-ravaged communities to save their children from the violence that plagues our streets through commonsense, effective safety measures."

"And it's not surprising then that they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren't like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations."

Later in a phone interview with the Winston-Salem Journal, Obama weasel worded a less than heartfelt apology: "Obviously, if I worded things in a way that made people offended, I deeply regret that." Meaning he stands by his statement and he's sorry people did not like it.

What others say about Obama:

Thomas Mannard, executive director of the Illinois Council Against Handgun Violence: "He (Obama) was somebody that we considered a friend. We certainly considered him a solid vote on legislation we would have supported." Mr. Mannard said Mr. Obama received "A" ratings from gun control organizations, and he cited his support for a ban on assault weapons and for measures strengthening background check systems.

Richard Pearson, executive director of the Illinois State Rifle Association, similarly described Mr. Obama as "a strong gun control person." Mr. Pearson said. "I have not known him to ever vote for a pro-gun bill."

**********

The questionaire Mr. Obama filled out (though he disputes it now, but his signature is on it):

Q: Is the D.C. law prohibiting ownership of handguns consistent with an individual's right to bear arms?

A: As a general principle, I believe that the Constitution confers an individual right to bear arms. But just because you have an individual right does not mean that the state or local government can't constrain the exercise of that right, in the same way that we have a right to private property but local governments can establish zoning ordinances that determine how you can use it.

35. Do you support state legislation to:
a. ban the manufacture, sale and possession of handguns? Yes.
b. ban assault weapons? Yes.
c. mandatory waiting periods and background checks? Yes.

Gun Issues
Indicate which principles you support (if any) concerning gun issues.
X a) Ban the sale or transfer of all forms of semi-automatic weapons.
X b) Increase state restrictions on the purchase and possession of firearms.
X g) Require manufacturers to provide child-safety locks with firearms.

**********

Federal legislation:

Obama voted against a bill (S.397) to protect the firearms industry from those who seek to sue manufacturers, distributors, and importers for the criminal misuse of firearms by criminals, an idea akin to suing car manufacturers for damages caused by drunk drivers.

**********

Obama's view on self-defense in the home:

Mr. Pearson, executive director of the Illinois State Rifle Association, said the senator drew the ire of gun owners when he voted with a minority of lawmakers in 2004 against a bill affirming a homeowner's right to use a firearm in self-defense against an intruder. Despite Mr. Obama's opposition, the Illinois Legislature overrode a veto by the governor to approve the bill.

In his answers to the 1998 Illinois State Legislative National Political Awareness Test, Obama said he favored a ban on “the sale or transfer of all forms of semi-automatic weapons.” By definition, this would include all pistols ever made, from .22 target pistols used in the Olympics to rarely-fired pistols kept in nightstands and sock drawers for the defense of families, and every pistol in between. Obama’s strident stand would also ban all semi-automatic rifles and shotguns, whatever their previously legal purpose.

**********

Obama's legislative record in Illinois:

In 1999, Obama proposed to make it a felony for the gun owner if a firearm stolen from his residence and used in a crime was not “securely stored” — effectively negating the homeowner’s right to self-defense.

Also in 1999, Obama voted “present” on a law that would require teens 15 and older to be tried as adults for firing weapons on or near school grounds. ("Present" is neither "yes" nor "no".)

And again in 1999 Obama proposed the idea of banning businesses that sell firearms from operating within five miles of a park or school — restrictions that would treat gun shops worse than “adult” businesses trafficking in pornography.

**********

Obama's connection with the anti-gun Joyce Foundation:

From 1998-2001, Obama sat on the board of directors for the Joyce Foundation, a left-wing group which today funds grants to anti-gun organizations such as the Violence Policy Center (which advocates total handgun prohibition, reinstatement of the Clinton-era “assault weapons” ban, and the ban of other firearms), the Ohio Coalition Against Gun Violence (which favors the registration of all handguns, seeks to overturn Ohio’s “concealed carry” law, ban standard capacity magazines, and ban economical handguns along with many semi-automatic firearms based upon their appearance), and Handgun Free America (which advocates a complete ban on civilian handgun ownership).

A form letter from Obama's campaign:

Dear Friend,

Thank you for contacting Senator Obama about gun laws and the Second Amendment. We appreciate hearing from you on this important issue.

As a former constitutional law professor, Senator Obama believes the Second Amendment creates an individual right, and he greatly respects the constitutional rights of Americans to bear arms. He will protect the rights of hunters and other law-abiding Americans to purchase, own, transport, and use guns. He also believes that the right is subject to reasonable and commonsense public safety regulation.

We must work to ensure that guns do not fall into the hands of criminals or the mentally ill through an effective background check system. When law enforcement agencies operate in concert at the federal, state, and local levels, the chances of solving a crime increases. Since 2003, the Tiahrt Amendment has restricted the ability of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) to share gun trace information with members of state and local law enforcement. The ATF has a wide-ranging database of gun information, yet Washington has threatened police officers with time in prison for attempting to access it. As president, Barack Obama would repeal the Tiahrt Amendment and give police officers across the nation the tools they need to solve gun crimes and fight the illegal arms trade.

Obama also favors commonsense measures that respect the Second Amendment rights of gun owners, while keeping guns away from children and from criminals who shouldn’t have them. He supports closing the gun show loophole and making guns in this country childproof. He also supports making the expired federal Assault Weapons Ban permanent, as such weapons belong on foreign battlefields and not on our streets. We also have to strike a reasonable balance between public safety and Second Amendment rights.

Senator Obama will continue to work for common-sense laws, like closing the gun show loophole, and effective law enforcement. He will also speak out against the culture of violence that traps so many of our young people.

Sincerely,

Barack Obama
Gentlemen,

That Obama is not gun friendly can never be in serious dispute anywhere. He is talking the liberal talk on gun control and it is well received in those circles.

I am backing John McCain in the coming election. I think he will lose however and it all comes down NOT to guns or any other philosophical issue or argument. In election years where the economy flounders, people vote with their wallets. Plain and simple it happens that way. With gas prices where they are and transportation costs driving the prices of food and other essentials higher, this election will be ALL ABOUT what the voters don't have. MONEY. I have talked to several gun owners who are going to vote for Obama and their reasoning is: "What good is gun ownership if you can't afford to go shooting?"

The wise old addage applies here folks..."Never underestimate the power of ignorant people in large numbers....."

    "Subject: Fwd: A pilot's perspective

POSITION, NOR IS IT SUBJECT TO AFFIRMATIVE ACTION SET ASIDES; ON-THE-JOB TRAINING WON'T CUT IT.

HE ENTERED POLITICS AT THE STATE LEVEL AND THEN THE NATIONAL LEVEL WHERE HE HAS MINIMAL EXPERIENCE.

HE IS PROUD OF HIS 'AFRICAN HERITAGE' (A FATHER WHO GOT A WHITE GIRL PREGNANT AND DESERTED HER).

WHERE IS THE PRIDE IN HIS 'WHITE HERITAGE' AND THE PEOPLE WHO STOOD BY HIM AND SAW TO IT THAT HE RECEIVED THE FINEST PRIVATE EDUCATION MOST OF US WISH WE COULD HAVE RECEIVED?

HE HAS BELONGED FOR OVER 20 YEARS, TO AN 'AFRO-CENTRIC' CHURCH IN CHICAGO THAT HATES WHITES, HATES JEWS, AND BLAMES AMERICA FOR ALL THE WORLD'S PERCEIVED FAULTS. (INCLUDING CREATING THE AIDs VIRUS IN ORDER TO INFLICT IT ON AFRICANS).

HE REPEATEDLY WHITEWASHES THE PASTOR, HIS CHURCH AND THE MEMBERS WHO CHEERED AFTER HEARING VITRIOLIC TIRADES AGAINST AMERICA .

HE COULD NOT CONFRONT HIS PASTOR BUT HE WANTS US TO BELIEVE HE CAN CONFRONT NORTH KOREA ANDIRAN ?

    YEAH RIGHT ! !

DURING HIS VERY BRIEF TIME IN THE UNITED STATES SENATE HE HAS MANAGED TO AMASS THE NUMBER ONE ULTRA LIBERAL VOTING RECORD OUT OF THE ONE HUNDRED MEMBERS.

HE HAS VOTED CONSISTENTLY FOR BIGGER GOVERNMENT AND HIGHER TAXES. HE HAS VOTED FOR BIG ENTITLEMENTS AND LEGISLATION THAT WOULD SEVERELY CURTAIL AMERICA 'S ABILITY TO FIGHT TERRORISM AND TO PROTECT OUR BORDERS AND OUR NATIONAL INTERESTS AROUND THE WORLD.

    BUT. . . . . . HE IS A GOOD ORATOR. ISN'T THAT A COMFORT?

YEAH, I THINK I SEE HOW WELL HE COULD UNITE THE COUNTRY.

I THINK THE TRUTH IS THAT HE HOPES NO ONE WILL PUT THE PIECES TOGETHER.

LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, LET ME INTRODUCE YOU TO OUR NEW CHIEF PILOT. HE HAS NEVER FLOWN AN AIRPLANE, IN FACT HE HAS NEVER EVEN SAT IN THE COCKPIT, BUT HE SAYS HE HAS RIDDEN ON PLANES BEFORE. WE ARE SURE HE WILL GUIDE US SAFELY THROUGH THE STORMS WE MAY ENCOUNTER ON THIS FLIGHT. WOULD YOU WANT TO FLY ON THIS PLANE WITH AN UNTESTED PILOT?

WHAT ARE PEOPLE THINKING? HAVE YOU NEVER HEARD THE STORY ABOUT THE WOLF HIDING IN SHEEP'S CLOTHING? THE HAND WRITING IS ON THE WALL, DO YOU NOT HAVE EYES TO SEE IT ?

THINK LONG AND HARD BEFORE YOU VOTE FOR THIS GUY! CONSIDER YOUR KIDS & GRAND KIDS, THEIR FUTURE IS IN OUR VOTING HANDS."
