WHILE campaigning in public for a speedy withdrawal of US troops from Iraq, Sen. Barack Obama has tried in private to persuade Iraqi leaders to delay an agreement on a draw-down of the American military presence.

According to Iraqi Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari, Obama made his demand for delay a key theme of his discussions with Iraqi leaders in Baghdad in July.

"He asked why we were not prepared to delay an agreement until after the US elections and the formation of a new administration in Washington," Zebari said in an interview.

Obama insisted that Congress should be involved in negotiations on the status of US troops - and that it was in the interests of both sides not to have an agreement negotiated by the Bush administration in its "state of weakness and political confusion."

"However, as an Iraqi, I prefer to have a security agreement that regulates the activities of foreign troops, rather than keeping the matter open." Zebari says.

Though Obama claims the US presence is "illegal," he suddenly remembered that Americans troops were in Iraq within the legal framework of a UN mandate. His advice was that, rather than reach an accord with the "weakened Bush administration," Iraq should seek an extension of the UN mandate.

While in Iraq, Obama also tried to persuade the US commanders, including Gen. David Petraeus, to suggest a "realistic withdrawal date." They declined.

Obama has made many contradictory statements with regard to Iraq. His latest position is that US combat troops should be out by 2010. Yet his effort to delay an agreement would make that withdrawal deadline impossible to meet.

Supposing he wins, Obama's administration wouldn't be fully operational before February - and naming a new ambassador to Baghdad and forming a new negotiation team might take longer still.

By then, Iraq will be in the throes of its own campaign season. Judging by the past two elections, forming a new coalition government may then take three months. So the Iraqi negotiating team might not be in place until next June.

Then, judging by how long the current talks have taken, restarting the process from scratch would leave the two sides needing at least six months to come up with a draft accord. That puts us at May 2010 for when the draft might be submitted to the Iraqi parliament - which might well need another six months to pass it into law.

"At this point, it is not yet clear what official American negotiations Senator Obama tried to undermine with Iraqi leaders, but the possibility of such actions is unprecedented. It should be concerning to all that he reportedly urged that the democratically-elected Iraqi government listen to him rather than the US administration in power. If news reports are accurate, this is an egregious act of political interference by a presidential candidate seeking political advantage overseas. Senator Obama needs to reveal what he said to Iraq's Foreign Minister during their closed door meeting. The charge that he sought to delay the withdrawal of Americans from Iraq raises serious questions about Senator Obama's judgment and it demands an explanation."

"The Logan Act is a United States federal law that forbids unauthorized citizens from negotiating with foreign governments. It was passed in 1799 and last amended in 1994. Violation of the Logan Act is a felony, punishable under federal law with imprisonment of up to three years."

Of course Obama wants to delay the draw down. He wants to claim credit for it after he is elected.

Clearly a violation of the Logan Act if, in fact, he is an American citizen.

If there is one ounce of truth in this, then it needs to get out to the public. Bob

Nothing would surprise me when it comes to the Democrates and manipulation of a situation to make them look better in the eyes of the voters ... Obama should do us all a favor and move to the middle east and seek out his "Roots", and take his America hating wife and Oprah with him ... WPT ... (YAC) ...

Didn't Pelosi also do something like this recently?
Didn't see anyone charging her with a crime either!

Where are the "Media" on this??

Guess they are too busy tripping all over themselves up there in Alaska looking into, what exactly?

Violating the Logan act is on the same level with treason for American citizens. Now lets see what the liberal media is willing to do with the story! I'm guessing very little!

If the media won't report it( and I know they won't) it is up to us to make sure everyone hears about it.

Obama's national security spokeswoman Wendy Morigi was quoted as saying Taheri's article bore "as much resemblance to the truth as a McCain campaign commercial."

Well that may be the case, as she them went on and said this in the statement, "In fact, Obama had told the Iraqis that they should not rush through a 'Strategic Framework Agreement' governing the future of US forces until after President George W. Bush leaves office."

Hmmm....isn't that what the article said??

Well what do you bet that this "Strong Denial" (complete with admission of guilt) will be all it takes to sweep this one under the rug, at least as far as the media is concerned. Like was previously said, this needs to be pressed from the grass roots level.

Do any of you remember the whoop-la that the Democrats raised when they thought that GHW Bush flew to France just prior to the 1980 election to met with the Iranians to negotiate them holding the hostages till after the election? We were treated to months of special investigations, not so much due to actual evidence but "due to the severity of the charge"?

He has a plan for you folks in Ohio too - or so says his latest TV ad.

"They are playing this here in Ohio about 2-3 times per HOUR

Barack Obama: I'm Barack Obama, candidate for president, and I approved this message.

Ray Schoenke: This is Ray Schoenke. I played football with the Washington Redskins. ("..(Schoenke) Now a millionaire contributor to Democratic causes who golfs with President Clinton and even attended one of the famous White House coffees,..") Now I'm president of the American Hunters and Shooters Association. It's important to me that our next President protects our Second Amendment rights to own guns and defend ourselves.

Barack Obama and John McCain will both make sure we can keep our guns.

But what about keeping our jobs?

Barack's got a real plan that invests in creating jobs here at home and cuts taxes a thousand bucks for working families.

    John McCain?

I saw a lot of cheap shots in my day...

But McCain's false attacks on Obama are just a fake to hide the ball. His plan sells out American workers.

McCain will keep giving tax breaks to companies that ship our jobs overseas.

And he'll look the other way while China breaks our trade deals.

It's the same old Bush playbook.

Look, when the coach loses eight years in a row, you don't bring him back for a ninth season!

We just can't afford more of the same."
