The LOAN portion was paid off- there's still the matter of the 50 billion INVESTMENT that remains- the U.S.Government STILL owns 60% of GM. GOOGLE it.

When you read the leftist media, you must read carefully, and then go to other sources to confirm.

This spate of "exciting" news that the loan was paid off totally neglected the fact that the Government also bailed GM out by buying 60% of the stock for 50 billion of our dollars, in addition to the relatively small loan.

    Not exactly.

As I understand it, GM has received a total of $52 billion in U.S. government aid, with the $6.7 billion considered a loan.

They paid the 6.7 billion in loan money back.

GM still owes $45.3 billion to the government.

That will supposedly be repaid when GM opens a stock offering to the public, where they hope to get enough to pay the rest back.

Plus, bankruptcy seems to have allowed them to wipe out $95 billion in debt.

This is your government at work.

Loan: $7 billion in direct loans to GM, the U.S. Treasury extended $43 billion in bailout cash in 2009 -- for a total $50 billion investment.

GM completed the repayment of its loans from the U.S. and Canadian governments by paying the outstanding balances of $4.7 billion and $1.1 billion respectively.

All those dealerships closed, workers laid off. Assembly line workers laid off. Local economy hit hard by less taxes collected.

Yup "excellent"...they will get better too..unless Obama unleashes a new EPA mandate...all cars and heavy trucks must get 200 mpg...have no more than 2 cylinders..be able to pull 10000lbs at 120mph .and the exhaust must smell like fresh cooked grits...oh yeah ..you must meet this by 2011

As one who held a portion of the $95B debt that was stolen from the bondholders I am not likely to buy a car from Obama Motors. Since the bonds were in my IRA, I no longer have the funds to buy any car.

And wasn't it nice how Obama ROBBED the bondholders...who held SECURED DEBT...in order to pay off Gettlefinger and the UAW who held UNSECURED DEBT. A TOTAL VIOLATION of our country's bankruptcy laws.
Chicago THUG POLITICS at it's best..!!!!!

GM paid off $8 billion in loans. BFD. They still owe the US taxpayers $45 Billion in bailout money. Did you get that, idiots? $45 BILLION is still owed to the US taxpayers, outside of the "loans."

Plus, the gd UAW owns 15% of the company, the US govt owns 60%, and the Canadian Govt owns 10%. NONE of that has changed, genius.

You'd have to hold a gun to my head, and my family's heads, to get me to buy a new GM. And it would have to be a big gun, and I'd have to be 100% convinced you had the balls to pull the trigger. Besides, the last FOUR GMs I bought were built in Canada. My two Hondas were made in the USA; and they are trouble free.

As I asked on another thread recently, where do these half-wits come from?

I know this will hurt a lot of ya'lls feelings, GM was a great company at one time but no more. I wouldn't take a GM if they were giving them away. Sorry.

Giving them away? Sure, I'd take a GM, then sell it and buy something better.

Yeah, that's probably closer to the truth.

Well Calvin, "MD" must not mean that you're a physician, because if you bought this thinly veiled hoax you certainly couldn't have made it through medical school.

It is interesting that the CEO is doing television commercials shamelessly acting proud and implying that GM has squared everything, when anyone with a 90 IQ knows they're still on welfare.

After 30 years of continuously driving GM, I'm unloading my last one this year and, like Daminfino said, wouldn't take another one for free.

    Dear President Obama,

Please explain to my invalid father-in law (89 years old, D-day vet) how his secured bonds became worthless and unsecured notes held by UAW and others were paid off. This little slight of hand maneuver cost him dearly.

I will walk before I buy a GM product.

The big three have been building crap for years. Chrysler and GM are at the top of the list for selling junk! Ford as actually increased not only their own quality control but the company has demaned higher quality from their suppliers. Calvin, your off the mark on this one! Toyota and Honda have been the bench mark of quality for some time. You don't believe me? Listen to a Ford or GM commercial; my wife worked for a large supplier of GM and they have no intrest or didn't in delivering a quality product.
