Illinois Democratic Rep. Luis Gutierrez is calling for Judiciary Committee hearings on the shooting death of Florida teen Trayvon Martin.

In a letter to House Judiciary Committee Chairman Bob Goodlatte, Gutierrez wrote that the committee must hold hearings on the matter “as soon as possible.”

“When any child is gunned down and no one goes to jail, it is incumbent on lawmakers at the highest level of government to investigate whether justice has been done, whether the underlying law is just, and whether federal legislation could help avoid another tragic death like the death of Trayvon Martin,” Gutierrez wrote.

ORLANDO, Fla -- U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder said Tuesday that it's time to question laws that expand self-defense - such as Florida's "stand your ground" law — in the wake of the George Zimmerman acquittal.

A day after he called Trayvon Martin's death "unnecessary," Holder told people at a national convention of the NAACP that such laws can be dangerous and that the federal government plans to do a thorough investigation into the Feb. 26, 2012, fatal shooting.

"It's time to question laws that senselessly expand the concept of self-defense and sow dangerous conflict in our neighborhoods," said Holder, of stand-your-ground laws. "These laws try to fix something that was never broken. There has always been a legal defense for using deadly force if — and the 'if' is important — no safe retreat is available."

I just don't understand why these polititians think ANYONE should have to retreat from a threat, ever. If the threat is of such a severe nature that deadly force is necessary, retreating won't make it any less severe. Anyone who has dealt with a vicious dog knows that running away triggers the prey reflex, and makes the attack worse.

Why aren't these political idiots asking why so many states feel they have to have these laws in place? Could it be because retreat hasn't worked? Could it be that the criminals have been conditioned from birth that they will face no serious consequences for their unacceptable or criminal actions?

Until parents accept that they have a duty to society to raise productive citizens, and their children are just like all the others, and AREN'T special, the sense of entitlement and immunity from consequences will continue to breed criminals. The school systems pushing "self esteem", and rewarding everyone for just showing up, when outstanding students get the same treatment as the ones who should be failed (oops! Politically incorrect! I should have said "held back", or "allowed to progress at their own pace") are also to blame. The courts allowing sentences to be plea bargained down so far as to be inconsequential must also be held accountable. Then the top federal legal person dares to question the decision of a duly appointed jury, who have sat through a trial and weighed all the evidence before arriving at a verdict which is contrary to his personal feelings.

Self defense is a natural reaction, and a right under Common Law. Any attempt to restrict or remove that right is only strengthening the criminal, and contributing to the devolution of society.

The irony is...if they're so keen on pushing "duty to retreat", why are they not criticizing Trayvon for failing in his duty to retreat if he felt he was being threatened by a stranger following him?

BTW: Not that the left cares one little bit about "FACTS",not that our contemptible Attorney General can be expected to look at FACTS before opening his racist mouth, but it juuussssttt MIGHT be worth noting that our Stand Your Ground law here in Florida...was NOT invoked by Zimmerman's defense. His lawyers DECLINED to ask for a Stand Your Ground hearing, which would have been necessary if they wished to invoke that particular statute in his defense. Simple fact is, they didn't NEED it.
Zimmerman's defense was based on a basic common sense understanding that a Murder in the second degree had not occurred, neither had a manslaughter been committed.
For those who might have missed it...the prosecution was SO DESPERATE to find SOMETHING to convict Zimmerman of that at the last minute..literally...as they were arguing jury instructions...the prosecutor tried to add CHILD ABUSE to the charges against Zimmerman.

This political theater FARCE is a perfect example of just how badly Obama and his myrmidons in government and Big Media have divided our nation.

Stand your ground laws protect minorities just as well as whites. I don't understand why they are suddenly against it. Oh, that's right Democrats are anti gun.

"Stand you ground" laws were introduced and passed by politicians that were put into office by voters. If we can pick and choose what laws we want to make go away...

    I pick "Obamacare".

DOJ, Obama Administration, and Dems... message to America, don't bother saving your own life because we are going to 'kill you' anyways or shoot yourself instead.

Your opponent, Zimmerman, is even bigger than you thought.

Retry until we get the verdict we want.

What more from the Department of Injustice?

Anywhere else in the world, Martin would have been considered a man, not a child.

And what about those DHS targets depicting 'actual sized' children with guns?

DOJ save time and money, why not make black the international don't shoot color instead of orange?

And further your crusade for nationalized mind control with "Hate Zimmerman" (Is that a Jewish name?) and be sure to, "Hate Bush" while you're at it.

DOJ, Dems, O, you are on a roll.

It ticks me off that they want to talk about everything except what is going on around them as a result of their self regulation. His hometown (Chicago) as well as Obama's, regulated the honest citizens and have an unreal homicide rate, but they sure don't want to talk about that.

Interesting video of 2013 Chicago murders through May

Heard 4 people were killed in Chicago during the Zimmerman trial alone, but does that make the national news?????

You all need to Google this name: PATRICK MAHANEY.......

I wonder if Al Sharpton is going to ask for a demonstration for JUSTICE in this case....I wonder if Mr. Mahaney had a CCW if he would be alive today.....I wonder if Mr. Mahaney had a CCW and shot his attackers if Sharpton and others would have shifted blame on Mr. Mahaney......

Isn't it time we started judging people by their BEHAVIORS instead of the color of their skin!

Here is another example of the Democratic Party "chipping away" at the laws of this land.

Or in short another click towards the total "PUSSIFICATION of America."

Soon it will be illegal to do anything but stand there and get your ass kicked or killed. Because you will go to jail if you fight.

Lets all be pussy's like Obama and Holder.

That is because most of the time when a person shoots another person in self defense it is a Republican shooting a Democrat.
