    O/T What

Thinking about purchasing one of these to help alert me when the cops are holding their "fundraisers". It has gotten crazy here in Minnesota. They have stepped up their saturation patrols to an unprecedented level. It's nice to have a little warning when they're watching. What's the best for the money?

Most cops use laser now...which is nearly impossible to detect in time to avoid the ticket. If you are lucky enough to be in an area that still uses radar, then go with the Passport by Escort. They have fewer false alarms.

I try and drive no more a few MPH over the limit if that and to follow big the big rigs at a distance on long trips. It is more relaxing and you really don't get there much faster anyway.

The wife likes it better that way. However, on some stretches of interstate you have to drive 80 MPH just not to get run over by traffic.

If you really want to make time, I recommend fewer pit stops.

I agree with Ed as well. The police around here are doing the same thing and have been doing it for just over a year now. They are all trying to get extra money so they don't have to lay off any people or take some kind of cuts in Benifits or Holiday pay. So they get it from us. I agree with above as well. Stay around 5-6 mph over and your safe. Don't hit 10 or more over speed limit, or be first in line of a group of cars on the interstate and all will be fine. Break-em all. Jeff

I have had great luck with the Valentine 1. I believe that they must be ordered from the manufacturer and are not available in local retailers. They are a bit more expensive, but they are good. They tell you the direction that the radar / laser signature is coming from, which is a nice feature.

This detector has paid for itself manu times over.

    A link is provided above.

    Good Luck,

    Pat

The best way to avoid getting a ticket is to get a CB radio and stay in touch with the truckers, they delight in warning you about cops. My experience has been that a radar tells you after you've aready been caught.

Find out what type they are using, X-band, K-band or Laser…if it’s X-band you will get a lot of hits from every door opener, K-band you stand a chance, Laser, forget it, when it goes off, they already have the print out…also know that a lot of K-band stuff is now trigger controlled. It’s not like the old days of the unit staying on all the time…I’ve run Bell and Foxes, but Escort is better, but NOTHING is fool proof, I asked for a warning ticket one time and the guy pointed at my detector, and said you got your warning didn’t you…I laughed and so did he, ….Grubby

For those of us who like to push it a little.........I use a CB radio along with a Cobra radar detector.

    Works for me.............so far.....

Wouldn't be without either of them.........not that I would ever speed......... (;-)

I believe the detector I bought about eight years ago detected front and rear. Whistler 1650. It sent false alarms about 12 X per real radar. About 20 alarms in 3 hours driving. You end up going near the speed limit anyway. It has multiple systems etc. I have not used it in years. When concerned I get out the CB and take it along. It's those guys livelihood, they care about tickets and you will learn of traffic jams as well.

My detector alerts at traffic / road construction locations and you will get a heads up when approaching one. I did a quick check and there are a few for sale @ ~$50 / I paid $100 when new, but I have extra stuff like visor bracket. My detector also picks up Laser and has 360 degree detection. Part of the extra alarms and the reason many alarms are set off when there's no cop.

If you drive the speed limit, you don't need a radar detector, you get there almost as fast (do the math, you'll be surprised at how little time you save by going faster, especially in town), you'll save a lot of money in the long run on gasoline, and you'll be far more likely to get there alive.

I have an Escort 50,,,,paid for itself several times. Valentine 1 is also good, but about $100 more. Remember Illinois and some other states outlaw them.

I have an Passport in both cars and they have both paid for their cost easily! Probably have paid for 4 times their cost! They will only help with a laser signal when you are behind someone else though. The only thing better is the Valentine One. But it is more expensive. At least you don't have to drive in slow motion like some of these jokers believe in. You can really make some good time with a good detector. I have done it from one side of the country to the other!

Valentine 1 hands down. Produced by the inventor of Escort. After a no compete hiatus he is producing a better detector complete with free upgrades as time marches on Valentine 1 is the only way to go. Larry Lockhart

Lots of advice on here and the best one is to slow down, relax and drive safe. I had a radar detector for years and it was stolen out of the truck. I thought I had to have another one but I retired, slowed down and it is all good. Life is too precious to be in a hurry all the time. Big city life - it sucks

Leave early and don't push the limit. Cost...FREE

Why would anyone want to put their family or mine at risk by speeding and then ask what is the best way to do it. Is ten or fifteen minutes worth someones life. I just can't figure people like you.

Ken X Why do you think driving the posted speed limit is driving in slow motion? Laws are in place for everyone even jokers like you.Trevor Dawe.

The poster didn't ask whether or not you all think he "should" drive over the speed limit. He didn't ask your opinion on if it's the safe or right thing to do. He asked what you considered the best radar detector is. He's a grown man, if he wants to speed then probably he is a big enough boy to make that decision.

I use Valentine one. The benefit is that it gives you a direction "bogey counter". Not only does it tell you how many radar are being picked up (and yes it works, i have seen 3 or 4 in one location), it also tells you the direction the radar is coming from (the best info in my opinion). Third and finally it has both a front and rear facing radar.

The valentine one is the best, bar none. And for what it's worth, cops still use all of the radar systems, not just laser (at least here in Michigan). Also, if you have an Iphone, there is an app that has an automatic notificaiton system for speed traps. They are Nmobile and Trapster. They have the maps for all of the camera ticket makers as well as the cops that sit and wait. The cops that wait are dependent on someone inputing their location on the system so it's not fool proof.

    Best regards,

    L

My guess is he is a younger gent as you are probably also. When you get to be our age you will have seen enough bad accidents and death scenes to make you a little more cautious, not to mention you appreciate life so much more as you age. Speed and have fun, just stay safe
