We have just received a harvested deer skull with antlers that we intend to hang in our "cowboy" room. Should we put a coat of something (polyurithane) on it to preserve the bone and stabilize the cranial parts prior to mounting it on the wall? Many thanks for your help.

I assume that it's been boiled...:) You'll want to make sure it's been degreased also to keep it from becoming discolored and to prevent any odors.

If there are any loose sections of bone, they should be glued in place from the inside. Same with loose teeth.

A polyurethane or clear lacquer will keep it looking better and make it easier to clean. It's not completely necessary to seal it though, just makes it look more 'finished'.
