I'm considering purchasing a Garmin or Tom-Tom GPS for my car. Does anyone already have experience purchasing one? Which model did you end up with and why?

    Thanks Much

I own a Tom Tom and just went on a 1400 mi RT. First time I used one and it was outstanding. It notified me of a turn at 2 miles before and told me what lanes to be in. We didn't even have a map with us. I will never take another trip without one.

I have had a Garmin 650 for about 6 months. I love it, very easy to use.

I have both - pretty similar actually. I would go with Garmin - seems like they have more waypoints that matter. AVOID the Navigon models. Probably great in Europe - they are terrible in the US. Don't even had WalMart in their directory (never know when you need shells FAST and there is always a Walmart nearby).

In the June, 2008 issue of Consumers Reports, they rate the Garmin Nuvi 350 as the #1 Best Buy, with the Garmin Nuvi 260 second, and the Tom-Tom 1 3rd. Edition third.....Dan Thome (Trap2)

We have a Garmin Nuvi 260 and are very happy with it. Not only tells you when to turn but also the name of the street to turn on to.

    Gavin,
No experience with the Tom-Tom but I suggest you search the web for reviews of it and a Magellan vis-a-vis the Garmin. I did and decided on a Garmin Nuvi 760 (paid about $478 at gpsnow.com). Said to have the best routing capability compared to the Magellan or Tom-Tom. It is bluetooth capable. Although my cell (LG VX8300) is not mentioned in the Garmin web site as "compatible", I was able to interface the two, following the simple provided instruction. Furthermore, using an SD card that slips into the left side of the 760, (I was able to download your into the card) and using the Garmin's FM transmitter, my car radio, and cell, I have hands-free communication. When a call comes through, the music pauses, and I can answer it through the Garmin or if I so choose, ignore it but pressing the appropriate box on the screen; which by way, shows me the number calling. Sorry for the length of the post but I hope this helps. Chichay

    Some good info above.

I have the Garmin 350, and consider it the best value currently available.

To add to ShooterIII's post about Radio Shack refurbished units. They are also offering a $20.00 mail in rebate for on line orders in addition to the nice price.
