I know I posted a message right after my surgery and it's been a while since I posted anything further, so here we go with a brief update and some good news. I haven't posted regular updates because honestly, from the beginning of December until now, the one thing that I found that's constant with cancer is things seem to always be in a state of flux. That said, let me bring you up to date, because I think we're at a point of somewhat static calm.

The surgery was Dec 14 and went well - no complications. I got home Dec 19 having been told the post-surgical pathology/biopsy results showed 5 of 15 lymph nodes showed some cancer cells. According to clinical definitions, the diagnosis was Stage 3c colon cancer. When I got home, I was easily fatigued - just walking up the stairs wore me out. I'm doing better now and am almost back to a normal life style. I'm driving, going out to eat, running errands, going to doctor's appointments alone etc. I saw the surgeon last Monday and he said all looked good - I am healing well. My diet has changed - more fruits, vegetables and fiber and less meat and carbs. Last Wednesday we went to see the oncologist for an introductory meeting. He explained the diagnosis to us, the chemo options available and ordered a PET scan to determine the extent of the disease. I had the PET scan yesterday.

Now here's the good news. We called the oncologist today for the results and his nurse told us the PET/CT scan showed NO evidence of any metastatic disease from my neck to my groin. I was prepared for bad news and hoping for good news but I have to say this news is beyond my hopes. Praise the Lord. I am frankly sitting here in an absolutely giddy state of temporary shock. Whether by miraculous intervention, nutritional changes or the fact that the cancer was contained, this is terrific news. We plan to go see the oncologist next week to discuss things, but I can't think of any good reason at the moment to do anything further, except periodic monitoring, including an annual colonoscopy.

Anyway, I wanted to share this with you and thank you all for your notes of encouragement and also for the prayers I know you and others were offering up for me.

Great news, I'd say. You seem to be in the right frame of mind, Gene. That in and of itself will work wonders. Keep up the good fight.
