Just happened to be in the garden with the camera when this gem came along. Female Eastern Tiger Swallowtail. Feeding on Purple Top Verbena. Must have been a recent hatch, it is pristine.

Good eye Wayne. One year here there was a migration of some butterfly here. can't remember now what it was, coming north out of Mexico. The street my property fronts out on is pretty close to north/south and thousands of these butterflies per hour flew straight north up the road. It was an amazing sight that went on for a couple of days.

Wireguy, those butterflies were probably Monarchs. They migrate twice a year, unfortunately their numbers are way down because of recent heavy frost in Mexico, and lack of Milkweed plants in the U.S.

Here is a picture I took of a butterfly here in Missouri. It is a "Common Buckeye" butterfly according to a picture in a Missouri Department of Conservation book.

I used a Sony Cybershot with a Macro setting and flash. The butterfly was on my concrete driveway near my house. It flew away just moments after I took the picture.
