I'd bet this is political suicide for the Democrats in a couple of weeks. You would think they could have found a way to give a cost of living raise.

Likes-to-shoot, they probably could afford to give us a raise if they would overhaul the system by discontinuing payments to those who enter this country and go on the dole, never contributing a dime. Medicare is being bled dry through outright fraud and by untold numbers of non-contributors.

When S.S was initiated, it took something like 14 workers contributing to pay for i recipient. We now have something like 3 workers contributing and likely to go to 2 fairly soon.

It's interesting and quite timely that today, we get the official word(even though we really knew all along) and i also receive my yearly property tax bill. I love it. They devalued my appraised value, while increasing the assessed value, thus increasing my tax bill. I'll be strolling into the county offices come Monday for a fireside chat.

    I say again....is it 2012 yet????

There was a meeting in NYC last week concerning the value of the monetary fund. It ended in a statemate where the US wanted to devalue the American Dollar and the Chinese didn't . The Chinese won.

The formula which determines SS COLA is set in law. While it's fun to blame somebody, the fact is that there wasn't enough inflation in 2010 to trigger any COLA. Of course, even though the Democrats aren't to blame for this, they are still dirtbags.

Remember....47% of the population doesn't pay income tax. Not because they are millionaires with write offs.....they are folks abusing our free handout system.

Why work, when unemployement, disablility, food stamps, public health care through WIC, and the local health department give aways, give you everything you need?

Gary Waalkes and shelly are correct. There are also some union contracts with COLA adjustments that will not get any increase in wages either.'

COLA means cost of living adjustment. By law, Social Security and Supplemental Security Income benefits increase automatically each year if there is an increase in the Bureau of Labor Statistics' Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W), from the third quarter of the last year to the corresponding period of the current year. This year there was no increase in the CPI-W from the third quarter of 2008 to the third quarter of 2009.
Since the cost of living actually went down during the statistical period written into the law, retirees should actually be getting a negative COLA, but the law prohibits it, so you only get zero increase. Here is a short article in the Christian Science Monitor that explains things. http://www.csmonitor.com/Business/Donald-Marron/2010/0920/Social-Security-no-COLA-in-2011

Let's please confine the bashing to things based on actual facts. To do otherwise makes us look like the fools on the other side.

The Government takes in less revenues...and yet some people still expect to get a "raise."

    Typical.

It's amazing to me how many Democrat-haters we have on this site, who are actually democrats themselves in principle...but just don't know it.

This is why I make my assertion that these "Tsunami" elections aren't really about anything intellectual at all...just angry people twitching like a caterpillar on a hot roof, flipping the toggle switch the other direction. If the Republicans were running things...many posters above would want to throw THEM out. This has nothing to do with principles - only "to hell with the country - what's in it for me."

Hey, retirees, how about this - people who are working don't get raises, so YOU don't EITHER! Ponder that while you're watching John Wayne reruns.

Yeah, I hear it now: "The Democrats forced me to pay into this for umpty-squat years, blah blah blah"...whatever.

It was _always_ a Ponzi scheme. About time we all get over it.

Well.......the COLA formula is clearly flawed.
Everything I buy has gone up.

The problem with liberals/democrats/progressives/socialists is that they don't know that they're wrong.

The problem is not Nobama nor the socialists in congress. The real problem is the misguided people that vote for them.

In addition to what halfmile said, military retirees also won't get a COLA raise this year either since the same formula is used for them as for SS recipients.

just like Seitz Shooter says, everything I buy has gone up so I dont know where those ass holes get their info. My grocery bill goes up every week, so does everything else. The less retailers sell, the higher they raise the prices and that is causing a collapse of the economy - no it is not getting better but worse. If I depended on my social security as my only income source, I would be looking for a job because it is in serious trouble. And there are no jobs

Cost of living allowance? What does that have to do with the free markets?

Cost of living allowance is a socialist ideal; that everyones allowance should change with the cost of living, AKA "THE FREE MARKET". PFFFFT!

Everyone know that Social Security should be privatized to protect against the socialist ideals of "cost of living allowance".

I thought all you republicans were on board with this?

No? Then you should check who you are voting for.

Fathawk, I read your post 3 times and you still don't make sense. There is much more involved in COLA than "Free market" stats.
