I'll be at their race shop (work related) in Brownsburg, IN later on this week. Pretty cool place if you are ever in the neighborhood. The fact that John Medlin is back with JFR has brought about all sorts of good Karma.

When did they start racing 4 cars at a time? I was surprised to see that last night.

There is only one four wide race a year and only one four wide track and that is the "Four-Wide Nationals at zMAX Dragway in Charlotte". The rules are slightly different and at times causes some problems with the drivers concentration on the starting line.

    4 wide is a cluster......

The fans don't get to see as many races, the sponsors don't get anywhere near the visibility, the timing system screwed up multiple times and the racers aren't happy with it. At one time, the racers were going to boycott the race but I didn't keep up with it to see how it got resolved.

I don't like the four wide. Las Vegas can be converted to four wide if it caught on. Back in 1969 and 70 at Minnesota Drag way I ran in G pure stock. Because of the many pure stock cars they ran us off four at a time. It was fun but dangerous. Some of us cars got to close. If you type in Minnesota Drag way there are pictures posted with the G pure stock cars running four wide.

Ithaca$$$Grade you must remember four wide racing at Minnesota Drag way? I out ran that Boss 302 of yours with my Hurst Scrambler remember.

I am not a fan of 4 wide. Its hard enough to keep track of 2 cars at 300mph+ let alone 4.

Thanks for posting Rick. The second car in the near lane is a ford. I found the testy part was during the launch or the hit. With cars of that era and running pure stock you had to run street tires which were mostly Good Year Poly Glass it was sometimes hard to hook up and easy to go side ways or fish tail. During eliminations there were times I had to lift to keep from crashing. I can remember pitting close to football player Allan Page. A lot of famous Drag Racers got there start or competed at Minnesota Dragways.

Do you remember Doc Halladay, he started his racing back in the 60's in Minneapolis and became a legion in drag racing. He started out as a Draftsman at Univac out of school and I being a old west history buff I started calling him Doc. When he left the cities, "he said because he was getting to many speeding tickets" the nick name stuck, and I lost track of him.

Well low and behold about 10 years ago at my wife's family reunion she introduced me to her cousin John Beckman or better known as Fast Jack Beckman. I asked him if he knew or had met Doc, he said knew of him as a legend but had not met him. Two years ago he met Doc in Texas and Doc talked about his years of racing in Minnesota.

shooter111 I remember Doc Halladay very well from years ago and still do. There is a drag strip "Cedar Falls Raceway" located about a mile south of the Iowa state Trap shooters home grounds. I raced there back in the late 60s to early 70s. It was called Neita raceway back then. Doc,Tom Hover and Bill schifsky would match race there from time to time. Now during the Iowa state trap shoot on Saturday night the drag strip has a show called the Night of Fire. There is 6 to 8 Nostalgia AA/FC for the show. Doc Halladay is one of them still making 250 MPH passes. I was invited into his pit area last year by a friend that took care of the refreshments and food for Doc. The year before I ran into Tom Hover at the same race. Tom and his wife sat with us at the show and we had a good talk.

The car Doc is running now is a 1978 Plymouth Arrow Nitro Funny car. Gerry Newman still tunes the car. Hoping Doc will be at the Night of fire again this year. Going to this particular show at a old Drag strip with all of the nostalgia cars is like going back in time.

whiz: I met Tom Hover Sr.one time when he had his car at the Big Wheel up on Lake Street. I was with my room mate and later best man at my wedding who was racing a 56 Chev at the New Brighten drag strip.

Does Doc still call that 1978 Plymouth Arrow Nitro Funny car "Telstar"?

I remember now that Fast Jack told me that Doc was going to race again in the new Nostalgic class.

Docs car is still named Telstar. Doc also helped put together another nostalgia funny car with Tom Hovers name on it. That car is named Showtime driven by and I think owned by Brian Stewart from Minnesota. There are videos posted on YouTube of both cars.

Blade819 I woke up one Sunday morning in the front seat of my 69 SC scrambler at the front gate of Minnesota Dragways one hot summer early morning in 1969 after a Saturday night of street racing in St.Paul and Minneapolis. Didn't have any money for a motel so my friends and I one with a 69 Super Bee decided to camp out at the entry gate and be the first one in. That Sunday morning when we got up the Chi Town Hustler and the Hawaiian funny cars were parked behind us. They had match races Saturday night at Union Grove or US 30 drag strip. Loaded there cars and drove all night for Match racing at Minnesota Dragways. We spent nearly a hour BSing with some of the best in the business I will never forget it. This is still when they used Dodge ramp trucks to haul there cars. During eliminations I was getting ready to stage my car and make my first run when we were told to shut of. At that time the Chi Town Hustler and the Hawaiian made there first round. I had a ring side seat watching the burn out and the dry hops by both cars. I was directly behind them. And of course no camera.

Don Schumacher didn't drive the Chi Town Hustler. Don had his own cars named Stardust. At some point in the early 70s Don named his cars the Wonder Wagon. White in color with dots like Wonder Bread. That car is running on the nostalgia circut as I seen it a couple of years ago.

whiz-bang, you made me dig for this stuff. I'm surprised I still have some of it. Lots of good memories from those days. If shootin seems expensive try Drag Racing. NO COMPARISON.

G Pure Stock??? Yeah, thats the class the Boss was in. Smallest engine in the class....but big stuff in the winners circle. I remember racing lots of 340 Darts/Dusters, AAR Cuda's, Z28's, and Road Runners up the ying yang. Don't remember any Ramblers.

    <a href="http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v662/jimw-mn/?action=view&current=MNDragwayClassChampion2.jpg" target="_blank">[IMG]</a>

Now, you do have some of these fender covers laying around, don't you?? They gave you a choice of a trophy or these.

    <a href="http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v662/jimw-mn/?action=view&current=Boss302MNDragwayChampion2.jpg" target="_blank">[IMG]</a>

    Good stuff.
