-- A man trying to loosen a stubborn lug nut blasted the wheel with a 12-gauge shotgun, injuring himself badly in both legs, Kitsap County sheriff's deputies said.

The 66-year-old man had been repairing the car for two weeks at his home northwest of Southworth and east of Port Orchard and had gotten all but one lug nut off the right rear wheel before getting frustrated Saturday, Deputy Scott Wilson said.

From about arm's length the man fired the shotgun at the wheel and was "peppered" in both legs with 00 buckshot and other debris.

Wilson described the injuries as "severe but not life-threatening."

    Fortunately, he's covered by Medicare.

True story from CT in the 1970s I recall from my first, hunter safety certificate class in 1980. Our hunting ed instructor told us a story that some present in the room were vaguely aware of - A guy had a spider crawl onto his foot while he was sitting in his kitchen, barefoot(apparently a dangerous spider) and had a 16 ga shotgun behind his pantry door within arm's reach - he literally was dumb enough to take the shotgun and blow the spider - and most of his foot - off from the ankle down.

i'll bet it was a LH thread, and he forgot to use a LH shotgun. Or he wasn't using his precision fit socket set on that nut.
