I have had a gun like this for over forty years. It is a 30-40 Krag. To open the box, just flip it side ways. To take out the bolt you have to slide the strap on top of the bolt side ways as you open the bolt handle up. To take the bolt out it takes a little practice.

The butt plate spring loaded door was for oil and such. I kept matches and flex saw in mine.

If I remember right a preliminary quick test was to check and see if the bottom of 30-06 case would chamber and then extract and eject then it had been converted. If it would not and you had to tip the gun up for the shell to slide out of the chamber it had not been converted. The reason being the 30-40 was a rimmed cartridge where the 06 was rimless. memories are like everything else the older they get the dimmer they get. Mike
