I know this is a little of topic but I need some reloading data for the 6.5 Carcano round using the 160 Gr. Hornady .268 Diameter Round Nose bullet. All I am able ot find is data using the .264. Does anyone out there have a Hornady reloading manual that shows this bullet? The IMR/Hodgdon site lists the 160 Hornady Round Nose bullet but just the .264 configuration. I am loading this ammo for a friend and having ZERO experience with this particular cartridge, I want to be on the safe side.

    I'd call Hodgdon.

Just curious, but why are you using the bigger diameter bullet?

I had a case similar to this with my Russian Mosin Nagant. The Hodgdon data was for .308 bullets, but I was using 0.312 diameter bullets because the barrel grooves slugged out to about 0.314"

The guys at Hodgdon told me to use the same data as for the .308 bullet.

The reason that I am using the larger bullet is that the Carcano requires a .268 bullet. You can load it with the ..264 but you will not get optimum accuracy (if that is possible in the Carcano) That is why Hornady offers it. All of the powder companies list data for the .264. Hornady is the ONLY US bullet manyfacturer to offer this bullet which is why I was hoping someone would have a Hornady manual they could leaf through for me. LIke I said earlier, better safe than sorry.

39 gr of H4831. These guns work at around 42,000 PSI. You will get a little under 2100 fps. This load is sufficient for deer out to 125 yards or so.

Also, for a gallery load, a case full of Accurate 8700. You will get about 1800 fps, and good accuracy.

The Carcano is only known for 2 reasons:1, 1 supposedly killed JFK, 2: most dropped military gun & seldom fired.
