1. We have added the ability for anyone to 'bump' threads that they have created. This is mainly useful in the classifieds area where posters constantly bump for sale threads to bring it to the top. This allows them the ability to do that without having to clutter the thread with extra 'TTT' and 'Bump' type posts. To bump it, go inside your thread and click on 'Thread Tools' at the top, then select 'bump'. You can bump only once per 24 hour period.

For more detailed information please see this post: Thread Bump Functionality.

I have that gun's sister, and in the same serial no. range.

Last of the 1964 models I believe.

OldGuns.net places the serial number at a manufacture date of 1961, regardless of what the last 3 digits actually are. Still a quality Model 12, though, no doubt about that.

I stand corrected on my serial number, as it is 1,970,XXX.

Some of my books show hoghead's nice Model 12 as a 1961, also.

I think it depends on what book you read as to their opinion on the date of manufacture.

I have several Winchester books, and one shows my gun to be manufactured in 1972, go figure.

Others tell me different dates, and still, a friend who has collected Winchesters for 40-45 years, said it was late 1964, by his reference material??

Year No. start of year No. made

RE: THE WINCHESTER MODEL TWELVE BY George Madis page 161

Year- Ser. no at beginning off yr.- Ser. no. at end of yr.- Total guns

    1972 1,970,899 2,005,728 34,829

RE: WINCHESTER AN AMERICAN LEGEND by R. L. Wilson page 371

Model - Type - Date of Manuf. - App. No. Made - Ser. No. Range

    1912 Shotgun 1912-63 1,968,307 1-1,968,307,
    Custom Shop special order
    1963-72, 1976-79: reintro.
    1972, dropped 1980; total
    since 1912: 2,026,721

And, GRAND OLD SHOTGUNS by Don Zutz, must have used one of Midas charts, including what I take to be a misprint in both charts of a serial number for the start of the 1972 year of 1,070,899. (I think they both meant 1,970,899)

It would be nice to have one verified list of production dates to use.

I,m sure they did their best.

Sorry some of the facts are hard to read, but you get my drift.

It would be nice to get some definite manufacture dates from the manufacturers. I tend to trust oldguns.net, as they're accurate on both Model 12's that I have. Depending on the last three digits, oldguns.net places 1970xxx as a very late 1971 or very early 1972.

I was able to shoot something very similar to the one here for sale at Indiana Gun Club yesterday. They're great repeaters.

    Hooked,

No, just a clean three-pin Model 12 w/Monte Carlo stock.

    Heeringa,

I still don't see how it could be newer than a 1964 since it is not a "Y" model, and not in the 2,000,000 range.

    Maybe I'm missing something.
