At the end of 1963, the serial #1962001 was assigned. From 1964 - 1966 a clean up of production took place. Ending serial number was 1970875. In 1972 the Y model production began. All of these guns came out of the custom shop. None of them used leftover parts. My information indicates that Serial number 19671xx was part of the "clean up" production that occured between '64 and '66.

Bill , my sources say that the last 1963 gun was serial # 1,964,759. I believe yours to be a 1964 gun.I have a friend that was the last manager of the custom shop and he states that recievers were kept for repair and custom orders ,any serial numbered reciever up to 1,999,999 was made from 1964 back. The custom shop put together guns as late as 1993 from pre 64 recievers. He states that he personally put together a 2 barrel set in 1993 from a pre 64 receiver. He also said that any of the guns after the 1970's that were assembled with the early recievers had to have the Y added to get there new numbering system to accept them to be shipped. So even if you happen to have a "Y" gun with a serial number before 2,000,000 it will still be a pre-64. Jeff

I have a Model 12 trap that I purchased NIB in 1968 that has Serial No.
19665xx. It came with a brown Hydro-Coil stock. I removed it and sold it to a friend to use on a ribbed standard grade to teach his boys to shoot trap. I restocked it with some nice black walnut and checkered it with the factory "B" pattern. Guiseppi Forte engraved it for me with ducks and geese in the bulino style. The receiver is electroless nickel plated, except for the rib extension.
It breaks them all if the operator is on his toes. A very fine piece and not for sale. Maybe my son will shoot trap some day.

Bigbore is right...I have one of the 1,966,XXX guns with a "Y" stamped next to the serial #....It's very obvious it was added after the serial #.

The 2,000,000 numbers and up have the "Y" more evenly stamped with the serial.

The recievers that were built in 72 thru 74 carry the "Y" and they are investment cast recievers, they are different from the pre-64's.
