On a Model 12 Winchester is the milled rib one that they soldered the post on the barrel then cut the dovetails, then the rib is slid on the dovetailed post and pinned with three pins? Thanks for info in advance!

Milled ribs are held by two pins. The three pin ribs were the last pre 64 ones offered. Jeff

The two pin rib was simply called the Winchester Ventilated rib, AKA the "two pin milled rib" it can be found on guns from 1920 to 1960. The next rib was, "The New Winchester Special vetalated rib" AKA the round post doughnut base rib, they were installed by Winchester under licence from Simmons 1954 to 1962. The next was the same New Winchester Special Ventalated rib designation and AKA "the Round post rib" from 1961 to 1962.These two ribs do not have Duckbill extensions. Please note that there is some overlap of the ribs. Now we get to yours. The last Factory installed rib type called The New Winchester Ventalated Rib, AKA the "Three pin Duck bill Vent rib" was seen 1962 through the end of production of the Pre-64 guns. Hope this clears things up a little. One more thing the last prduction Pre-64 model 12 ,Serial number 1,999,999 came out of the custom shop with a Two pin Duck bill milled rib on The Gilson Special. All 2,000,000 serial number guns and later have a Y in the serial and have there own Vent rib. Jeff

Wow thanks for the education! Mine is the later one as you described with the duck bill and basically has rectangular post, with three pins at one post to affix the rib. I have the "original" box and the description matches the gun, the only thing is the serial number was hand written on or over on the box label. i dont know if it was faded or if the previous owner did that, came from and estate liquidation. nice wood, monte carlo stock, shes good and tight been shot but not all that much. Only two small blems in the bluing no rust nice shiny bore and chamber.
