I don't have my Madis book with me, can someone tell me the year built of sn 1965xxx. An online check indicates after 63. And did guns of this era have the red W grip cap?

Winchester's last serial # listed was 1962001 in 1963. They had a "cleanup production" from 1964 through 1966 with a serial # of 1970875 ending the production. (At least that is what the Blue Book of Gun Values states). My guess your gun was made around 1965. Ed

Trying to make sense of Winchesters record keeping, (or lack of) makes a person want to laugh. According to the Blue Book of Gun Values, (28th Edition) it lists; "Approximate last # of production 1962001 . (1963)" They go on to say that " A cleanup of production took place from 1964 through 1966 with the last # listed as 1970875". Now, when looking at the book on Model 12's by George Madis it says your serial number reflects a manufacture date of 1967 or 1968. (depending on what the last 3 digits of your serial # is). Collecting Winchesters, using Winchesters' records can indeed drive one "to drink". Ed
